This publication will accompany Ellen Gallagher's exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center, which will feature twenty new drawings and a site-specific sculpture. In all of her work, Gallagher merges traditional abstraction with social commentary; this surprising union results in engaging and poetic works that examine the cultural signs of race. The major sculpture in this exhibition and catalogue will have the appearance of a jungle gym, and will be formed of obsessively painted, intertwined wooden dowels. The book as a whole will include essays by several prominent scholars, and will present Gallagher's interest in cultural history, science, and science fiction.

Known for her lush surfaces, vivid color, and energetic brushwork, Cecily Brown inhabits her torrid, atmospheric paintings with life forms that swim amongst swells of color and gesture. Often cast in sensual situations, her figures advance and recede into painterly abstraction. With her various references to art history-- from the seventeenth-century French Classicism of Nicolas Poussin to the Baroque flamboyance of Peter Paul Rubens and the living gestures of Willem de Kooning, among other Abstract Expressionists--Brown reinvigorates twenty-first-century painting. Working alongside the traditions of the medium, and borrowing freely from them, Brown absorbs formerly male-dominated approaches to painting, unapologetically infusing a feminine viewpoint. This publication, which accompanies the first one-person museum survey of Brown's work in the United States, features three major new essays by Jeff Fleming, Linda Norden and Linda Nochlin, as well as a series of key color reproductions.

Tom Sachs has a cardboard box in his studio into which he throws miscellaneous screws, nuts and bolts after he has attempted, unsuccessfully, to use them in a project under production. Instead of wasting time categorizing and storing them, he throws them into the box until needed again. The box, labeled "Logjam," exemplifies Sachs' working method and his response to the world: he needs to make things; everything else just gets in the way. Published to accompany the artist's first one-person museum exhibition in the United States, which traveled from Des Moines, Iowa, to Waltham, Massachusetts, in 2007, this handy artist's-book-cum-inventory-cum-exhibition-catalogue documents what may be Sach's most personal show to date--focusing on two bodies of work that are actually about the process of art-making, Sachs' "work" and "living" stations.
