'Birmingham's what I think with' : so begins 'Six Texts' for a documentary film about Roy Fisher, made by Tom Pickard in 1991. And 'a slow petty river' - two in fact - that merged and sank out of sight beneath industrialized Birmingham, now lends itself to become the title of this book of poems. 'Six Texts' develops subjects already made familiar in Fisher's earlier work, City (in Poems 1955-1987), and A Furnace (1986). Another commission, for Ronald King's artist's-book-with-puppets, Anansi Company, provides a contrasting group of poems, that give continued evidence of Fisher's anarchic pleasure in identifying the absurd, the self-important, and the politically hypocritical - themes that recur in other poems in this original collection.

Education in Popular Culture: Telling Tales on Teachers and Learners

Education in Popular Culture explores what makes schools, colleges, teachers and students an enduring focus for a wide range of contemporary media. What is it about the school experience that makes us wish to relive it again and again? The book provides an overview of education as it is represented in popular culture, together with a framework through which educators can interpret these representations in relation to their own professional values and development. The analyses are contextualised within contemporary, historical and ideological frameworks, and make connections between popular representations and professional and political discourses about education. Fisher's intelligent, candid voice comes alive in this carefully edited selection of interviews from 1975 to 1998; the picture is filled out by an autobiographical piece that covers the poet's early years, by Fisher's own tongue-in-cheek review of his last collection, and by five of the Talks for Words that he recorded for the BBC in the late 1970s. Opening with new poems written during Roy Fisher's 80s - since his Costa-shortlisted collection Standard Midland (2010) - the book's second section is a gathering of uncollected poems mainly written during the 1960s, while the third part contains poems, similarly uncollected, written in the 1950s. Slakki is Old Norse for a shallow depression among hills: "Not much of a valley. A Slack," writes Roy Fisher, with typical self-effacement. Derek Slade contributed substantially to composing the notes on sources and earlier appearances of the works gathered here.
