<p>Fet is the finest nineteenth century Russian lyric poet following Pushkin. Many of his poems are addressed to his dead fiancee. Such is the strength of feeling in them that death is overcome, and what the Soviet poet Vinokurov has called their 'ringing, tragic dominant' is richly combined with other strains: joy, harmony, delight in the freshness and fullness of the natural world.</p>
