A temporary move to Toronto in the winter of 2000, a twisted ankle, an empty house—all inspired Mouré as she read Alberto Caeiro and Fernando Pessoa's classic long poem O Guardador de Rebanhos. For fun, she started to translate, altering tones and vocabularies. From the Portuguese countryside and roaming sheep of 1914, a 21st century Toronto emerged, its neighborhoods still echoing the 1950s, their dips and hollows, hordes of wild cats, paved creeks. Her poem became a translation, the jubilant and irrepressible vigil of a fervent person. "Suddenly," says Mouré impishly, "I had found my master." Caeiro's sheep were his thoughts and his thoughts, he claimed, were all sensations. Mouré's sheep are stray cats and from her place in Caeiro's poetry, she creates a woman alive in an urban world where the rural has not vanished, where the archaic suffuses us even when we do not beckon it, and yet the present tense floods us fully. In this ecstatic long poem of hope and creeks and cats and rain, Sheep's Vigil by a Fervent Person catches Governor General's Award-winner Erin Mouré at her most playful and ingenuous—and wearing her Galician name.

Fernando Pessoa, Preface to The Mad Fiddler Written between 1910 and 1917, The Mad Fiddler is one of the most storied works attributed not to a heteronym (or pseudonym or orthonym), but to Pessoa himself. Included in all major editions of his English-language poetry, *The Mad Fiddler* has seldom seen publication in the Anglo-American sphere, in part due to the difficulty (or impossibility) of an agreement about a "definitive" edition—Pessoa never published Fiddler in his lifetime, in spite of his efforts, and so while typeset versions exist in the archive, there are notes and edits from different periods. Our version is based on the collection published as part of *Poesia Inglesa*, edited by Luísa Freire, including 53 poems as well as the author's preface. This edition also includes an introduction by Jessica Sequeira. Fernando Pessoa is one of the towering figures of Modernism and 20th century Portuguese letters. He is best known today for Livro do Desassossego (The Book of Disquiet) and the poetry he wrote under the heteronyms Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis. He published mostly in magazines, with just one book, Mensagem, and two small pamphlets of English poetry available in print during his lifetime.
