The founder of modern linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure inaugurated semiology, structuralism, and deconstruction and made possible the work of Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Lacan, thus enabling the development of French feminism, gender studies, New Historicism, and postcolonialism. Based on Saussure's lectures, Course in General Linguistics (1916) traces the rise and fall of the historical linguistics in which Saussure was trained, the synchronic or structural linguistics with which he replaced it, and the new look of diachronic linguistics that followed this change. Most important, Saussure presents the principles of a new linguistic science that includes the invention of semiology, or the theory of the "signifier," the "signified," and the "sign" that they combine to produce. This is the first critical edition of Course in General Linguistics to appear in English and restores Wade Baskin's original translation of 1959, in which the terms "signifier" and "signified" are introduced into English in this precise way. Baskin renders Saussure clearly and accessibly, allowing readers to experience his shift of the theory of reference from mimesis to performance and his expansion of poetics to include all media, including the life sciences and environmentalism. An introduction situates Saussure within the history of ideas and describes the history of scholarship that made Course in General Linguistics legendary. New endnotes enlarge Saussure's contexts to include literary criticism, cultural studies, and philosophy.

Excerpt from Course in General Linguistics Few other figures in the history of the science of language have commanded such lasting respect and inspired such varied accomplishments as Ferdinand de Saussure. Leonard Bloomfield justly credited the eminent Swiss professor with providing "a theoretic foundation to the newer trend in linguistics study," and European scholars have seldom failed to consider his views when dealing with any theoretical problem. But the full implications of his teachings, for both static and evolutionary studies, have still to be elaborated. Saussure succeeded in impressing his individual stamp on almost everything within his reach. At the age of twenty, while still a student at Leipzig, he published his monumental treatise on the Proto-Indo-European vocalic system. This treatise, though based on theories and facts that were common property in his day, is still recognized as the most inspired and exhaustive treatment of the Proto-Indo-European vocalism. He studied under the neogrammarians Osthoff and Leskien, yet refuted their atomistic approach to linguistics in his attempt to frame a coherent science of linguistics. Despite the paucity of his publications (some 600 pages during his lifetime), Saussure's influence has been far-reaching. At Paris, where he taught Sanskrit for ten years (1881-1891) and served as secretary of the Linguistic Society of Paris, his influence on the development of linguistics was decisive. His first-hand studies of Phrygian inscriptions and Lithuanian dialects may have been responsible for some of the qualities that subsequently endeared him to his students at the University of Geneva (1906-1911). His unique insight into the phenomenon of language brought to fruition the best of contemporary thinking and long years of patient investigation and penetrating thought. The dominant philosophical system of each age makes its imprint on each step in the evolution of linguistic science.

After his death, we hoped to find in his manuscripts, Obligingly made available to us by Mme. De Saussure, a faithful or at least an adequate outline of his inspiring lectures. At first we thought that we might simply collate F. De Saussure's personal notes and the notes Of his students. We were grossly misled. We found nothing - or almost nothing - that resembled his students' note books. As soon as they had served their purpose, F. De Saussure destroyed the rough drafts of the outlines used for his lectures. In the drawers of his secretary we found only Older outlines which, although certainly not worthless, could not be integrated into the material of the three courses.Our discovery was all the more disappointing since professorial duties had made it impossible for us to attend F. Decir que el Curso de lingÃ¼istica general de Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) constituye un hito en el desarrollo de las ciencias sociales contemporaneas es ya un lugar comun, pues junto con las obras de Freud y de Marx este libro integra el triptico que esta en la base de la cultura de nuestro tiempo. El Curso de lingÃ¼istica general recoge las lecciones que Saussure impartio en sus clases de la Universidad de Ginebra, recopiladas en un volumen postumo por sus discipulos directos; en 1945 lo tradujo al espanol para la Editorial Losada el gran filologo y critico Amado Alonso. Asi, esta se convirtio en la edicion clasica del libro que abrio las puertas a la lingÃ¼istica contemporanea. Entre 1907 y 1911 Ferdinand de Saussure da tres cursos de lingüística general en la Universidad de Ginebra que supondrían, prácticamente, y en líneas generales, el nacimiento de la lingüística contemporánea. A su muerte, Ch. Bally y A. Sechehaye publicaron a partir de las notas y apuntes de alumnos, el Curso de lingüística general (1916), base de los estudios lingüísticos modernos, porque Saussure define en él por primera vez conceptos clave, adjudicándoles una acepción determinada, avalada posteriormente por la lingüística: por ejemplo términos como sincronía, diacronía; lengua, lenguaje, habla; signo, significado, significante, unidad linguistica, circuito de habla, estado de lengua, etcetra, nacen en el Curso de linguistica general para pasar luego a manos diversas que los definen desde sus enfoques particulares la estilistica ginebrina de Bally, los fonologos y estructuralisticas de la escuela de Praga, la psicolinguistica, la escuela glosematica, Chomsky. Pero a pesar de la diferencia que mantienen todas las escuelas, la base de su trabajo arranca del Curso de lingüística general, que afectó a todos los sectores de las ciencias humanas: el pensamiento de Saussure representa, junto con el de Freud, uno de los puntos de partida del desarrollo actual de las ciencias. Las presente edición incorpora en las notas de Mauro Armino los frutos de los trabajos saussureanos mas recientes, que han aportado criticas y rectificaciones - avaladas por las notas manuscritas de Saussure o por la confrontación de los cuadernos de apuntes de los alumnos - al texto preparado por Ch.
