Wargames through the Ages was first published to fill a gap in literature of the hobby of wargaming. It was a one volume summary from the outbreak of the American Civil War and the concludes with the end of World War II in 1945.Between 1860 and 1945, the shape of warfare, armies, tactics and equipment underwent a wholesale change. In the same era, the map of Europe was redrawn and the machinations of world politics saw the introduction of military movements by land, sea and air on an international scale hitherto unconsidered.In 1861, the cavalry retained a still significant, if diminishing, role in the schemes of battle commanders; but by 1945 massive technological advances, culminating in the introduction of computerised planning had so altered the situation that a fundamentally new approach was necessitated as it is for the wargamer. The author has therefore considered at length the problem of formulating new rules, and the classification and assessment of armies and their conditions.

In discussing how this can best be simulated on a table-top battlefield the author gives comprehensive information as to contemporary styles of warfare which provides a basis for the formulation of rules.The period under review is extensive, and beginning with The French Revolutionary wars, it carries the reader through the Napoleonic Wars, then onto later conflicts with the Mexican War 1846-48, the Crimean War 1854-1855 and the Austrian/ French Wars of 1859.

Early in 1881 unrest in the Sudan began to crystallize around Mohammed Ibn Ahmed el-Sayyid Abdullah. Proclaiming himself the long-expected Madhi, the Guided One of the Prophet, he preached that the Sudan was to be purged of its Egyptian oppressors. Drawn in by the Egyptian failure to deal with the situation, the British sent General Gordon to organize an evacuation. On reaching Khartoum however, General Gordon believed, incorrectly, that the Madhi could be reasoned with. Instead of negotiating, the Madhi besieged the town for 317 days, ending in the fall of the city, and the death of Gordon, which has come to encapsulate the myth of the Imperial hero. This title details the campaign in context and, in particular, at the battles fought by the British columns sent to relieve Khartoum.
The two campaigns fought by the British in the Sudan, in 1884-5 and 1896-8, were far more than an attempt to relieve Khartoum and the eventual reconquest of the country. Soon, the Egyptian government, installed by the British after the Arabi Pasha revolt of 1882, found itself hard-pressed to maintain authority in the Sudan, being forced into a series of abortive operations against the Mahdi's swelling hordes of followers until finding itself with only token garrisons to defend isolated posts at Sennar, Tokar, Donagla and Berber. Drawn in by the Egyptian failure to deal with the situation, the British became involved, sending General Gordon to organise the evacuation of civilians and troops. On reaching Khartoum however, General Gordon proved reluctant to do this, believing, incorrectly, that the Madhi could be reasoned with. Instead of negotiating however, the Madhi besieged the town for 317 days, as inadequate government measures led to delay after delay for the relief column as it struggled its way through hostile territory.

The British, already worried at Arabi's rise were further concerned when his inflamed supporters threatened to commit a massacre of all foreigners in Egypt. The Victorian press helped to stoke public outrage at events in Egypt, and this, combined with the impassioned demands of Arabi that the foreigner be driven out of Egypt and massacres of Christians in Alexandria prompted an armed British response, first in the form of a bombardment of Alexandria by the Royal Navy, and then as an expeditionary force under Lieutenant-General Wolseley. Wolseley's quick success- re-established British control of the country and deposed Arabi, who was subsequently brought to trial and exiled to Ceylon. Donald Featherstone's narrative describes the whole of the 1882 Egyptian campaign: the naval bombardment of Alexandria, Wolseley's outflanking of the Egyptian forces via the Suez Canal, the advance to Kassassin and the decisive battle at Tel el-Kebir. It is supported by detailed orders of battle and graphics based upon highly accurate military cartography carried out by the victorious army.

The opposing armies and their leaders are investigated, showing that the fanaticism of the Ansar was no substitute for the modern weaponry of the Anglo-Egyptian army. The appearance and use of the Maxim machine gun, first introduced into the British army in 1891, is studied, as is the basic weaponry of the Mahdist warriors and the personal weapons of British troops involved in the campaign. The latter's uniform is also examined: the red jackets of previous engagements now having been dropped for a Khaki field uniform. Furthermore the leaders of both sides are also looked at, including the severe and ruthless Major-General Sir Herbert Kitchener.
