The Ukiyo-e print was a dominant and popular art form in Japan - from the 17th to 19th centures - showing street scenes, lovers' assignations, portraits of courtesans and actors, landscapes and travelogues. "Japanese Prints" consists of 139 reproductions by 47 grand masters of this art form. Grouped by artist, each print is accompanied by detailed commentary. Amongst the most celebrated of the artists featured here are: Utamaro, with his courtesans and geishas; Sharaku, with his portraits of actors on the Kabuki stage; and Hokusai, with his landscapes - among them "36 views of Mount Fuji". The books's essays - by Mitsunobu Sato, Curator of Riccar Art Museum, Tokyo and Thomas Zacharias, Professor at the Munich Academy of Art - aim to familiarize the reader with the history of this art form, and examine the technique, content and style of Japanese prints and their influence on European art at the turn of the century.

In 1928 Josef Hoffmann described the Wiener Werkstdtte, a group of studios and workshops which he had founded 25 years previously with Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer, as follows: ""The Wiener Werkstdtte, established in 1903, is an enterprise for the active promotion and cultivation of all endeavours in the pursuit of art and quality in modern crafts."" For thirty years, a group of highly qualified architects and craftsmen succeeded in realizing their dream of fusing architecture and interior design into a Gesamtkunstwerk - a ""total work of art."" 
The Wiener Werkstdtte combined fine and applied arts to convey a whole new outlook on life, liberated from the strictures of historicism and superfluous ornamentation. The buildings and objects that resulted combine classical elegance with streamlined functionality. No everyday object was too banal, no architectural task too complex for the artists of the Wiener Werkstdtte. They experimented with an endless variety of materials, from gold and precious stones to papier mbchi and glass beads, and their work still bears lasting witness to a unique and vital artistic movement. Even today, architects and designers continue to cite in their work the innovations and ideas of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstdtte.

Ukiyo-e: 139 reproductions, grouped by artist, each accompanied by a detailed commentary This volume reproduces 139 Japanese woodblock colour prints by 43 famous masters of ukiyo-e, the popular art of the 17th to the 19th century. The originals are in the Riccar Art Museum in Tokyo, the world’s largest and most celebrated collection of such prints. On account of their rarity and value, 87 of them have been designated Japanese National Treasures or Major National Cultural Heritage Items. The introductory essay, "Ukiyo-e - Origins and History", by the Curator of the Riccar Art Museum, Mitsunobu Sato, familiarizes the reader with the history of this art form. This is followed by the chapter "Cherry - Wood - Blossom", in which Thomas Zacharias, Professor at the Munich Academy of Art examines the technique, content and style of Japanese prints and their influence on European art at the turn of the century. The major section of the book consists of the 139 reproductions, grouped by artist, each accompanied by a detailed, sensitive commentary. Street scenes, lovers’ trysts, festivals, portraits of courtesans and actors, landscapes and travelogues - these are the motifs of the ukiyo-e print. The dominant theme, however, is woman’s beauty, the grace of her posture and attitudes, and the decorative aesthetics of her flowing garments. Amongst the most celebrated of the artists featured here are Utamaro, with his beautiful courtesans and geishas; Sharaku, with his portraits of actors on the kabuki stage; Hokusai, with his landscapes, among them the "36 Views of Mount Fuji"; and Hiroshige, with his "53 Stations on the Tokaido" and his "100 Views of Famous Places in and around Edo". The ten-page appendix includes a glossary of technical terms and biographies of all 43 artists.
