<p>From the early 1960s through the early 70s, Pop Art swept the industrialized world. Iconoclastic, rebellious, and immediately popular, the new movement found its roots in an unprecedentedly prosperous consumer society. Encouraged by galleries and publishers who catered to a new collectors' market, many Pop artists were drawn to the creation of editions on paper and in multiples. 60 vibrant examples by such American icons as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by such European artists as Richard Hamilton, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gerhard Richter, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sigmar Polke, are organized according to the themes of mass media consumer culture, politics, erotica and more. All of the works included herein are from The Prints and Illustrated Books Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, an exceptionally rich repository of such work.</p>

Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, known as Wols (1913-1951), is one of abstract painting's best-kept secrets, yet one of its most influential practitioners. Wols helped to pioneer the French style of abstraction known as Art Informel, or Tachism, alongside the likes of Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Roberto Matta, Mathieu and Henri Michaux. This style of painting developed in tandem with Surrealism, extending the latter's Symbolist inheritance into strange, nervous or dreamlike mark-making and calligraphic gestures, eventually producing a highly poetic European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. Wols' oil and watercolor abstractions are both the epitome and the forerunner of Art Informel, but the complexity of his output, which also encompassed portrait and fashion photography and writing, makes him a more elusive and fascinating figure. This volume compiles works by artists whom Wols has inspired or drawn upon, from Mark Tobey, Guy Debord and Raymond Hains to Marlene Dumas and Wolfgang Tillmans, alongside works by Wols himself.

<p>Öyvind Fahlström and Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd--his work is prominently represented in the collection of the Sprengel Museum Hannover through a generous donation by the artist--belonged to a circle within the Swedish art scene of the 1950s and 60s that was united in its veneration of Marcel Duchamp and an enthusiasm for his work, yet also in its fierce rejection of Abstract Expressionism. The exhibition, and especially the book GEGEBEN SIND, brings together the works of these three very different artists, revealing numerous connecting lines between their works, and gradually, in their concepts and games, in their wordplay and irony, one realizes what these artists have in common. Among Reuterswärd's best-known works is the sculpture "Non Violence," the revolver with the knotted barrel placed in front of the New York headquarters of the UN, which has become a symbol, as it were, of the that institution's seemingly almost impossible task of preserving peace. The sculpture, which has been installed at sixteen other locations around the world, was Carl Frederik Reuterswärd's response to the assassination of John Lennon.</p>
