Excerpt from Theosophy or Psychological Religion: The Gifford Lectures Delivered Before the University of Glasgow in 1892 The discovery of God, the discovery of the Soul, and the discovery of the oneness of God and the Soul, such have been the three principal themes of my Gifford Lectures, and I have ventured to make at least an attempt to treat each of them, not simply as a philosopher, but as an historian. While the philosophy of religion treats the belief in a First Cause of the universe, and in an Ego or Self, and in the true relation between the two, as matters of psychological development, or of logical consecution, it was my purpose to show, not what the process of each of these discoveries may or must have been, but what it has been in the history of the world, so far as it is known to us at present. I am fully aware that this historical method is beset with grave difficulties, and has in consequence found but little favour in the eyes of speculative philosophers. So long as we look on the history of the human race as something that might or might not have been, we cannot wonder that the student of religion should prefer to form his opinions of the nature of religion and the laws of its growth from the masterwork of Thomas Aquinas, the Summa Sacrae Theologiae, rather than from the Sacred Books of the East. CHAPTER I. THE ALPHABET. § I. SANSKRIT is properly written with the Devanragari alphabet; but the Bengali, Grantha, Telugu, and other modern Indian alphabets are commonly employed for writing Sanskrit in their respective provinces. Note-Devanagar( means the Nagar( of the gods, or, possibly, of the Br~hmBJl9. A more eurrent style of writing, used by Hindus in 1111 common transaclions where Hindi is the language employed, is called simply Nagart. Why the alphabet should have been called lI'dgart, is unknown. If derived from nagara, eity, it might mean the o.rt of writing as first practised in cities. (PaJ]. IV. 2, 128.) No authority has yet been adduced from any ancient author for the employment of the word Devan/igart. In the Lalita-vis/ora (a life of Buddha, translated from Sanskrit into Chinese 76 A. Upanishads are mankind's oldest works of philosophy, predating the earliest Greek philosophy. They are the concluding part of the Vedas, the ancient Indian sacred literature, and mark the culmination of a tradition of speculative thought first expressed in the Rig-Veda more than 4000 years ago. Remarkable for their meditative depth, spirit of doubt and intellectual honesty, the Upanishads are concerned with the knowledge of the Brahman, the Ultimate Reality, and Man's relationship with it. The name Upanishad is derived from the face-to-face mode of imparting knowledge - in the utmost sanctity and secrecy, to prevent its trivialisation or perversion.
