David was a tall, slim, dark-skinned kid who was focused in school. Next year he was going to middle school, and he proudly declared to his mom that he was growing up. Lisa looked with concern on her face from the kitchen. She could see David in the living room.“You good cuz? I see you still having nightmares about what happened a month ago.” David was having nightmares that the Blood they murdered was coming back to kill him. Lisa rubbed David’s back, “You going to be all right little brother. The first time takes longer to get over.” David just stared hard trying to understand how such a beautiful black Queen could be a cold-hearted killer. He felt better though that he had gotten revenge for his brother, B.G. Looney and his family.David smiled a little, “Sis, how can you be so gorgeous and so gangster at the same time?” Lisa threw up the neighborhood Crip sign.“It’s just in me,” she chuckled with the confidence of a killer. “Brother, you going to need a new name. Little Cuz don’t suit you no more. How about Mister?” Lisa asked smoothly pointing both her index fingers at him. David was pleased.“Sister, I like that cuz, Mister.” He put his face in his hands and thought about how much he loved his new name, Mister.“Let’s go on Washington Street later tonight, Lisa said. “I got a babysitter, and I need a stack. You know I’m strapped so let one of them niggas run up on you again.” Lisa rubbed her hands together at the thought of fucking up another Blood. David went into kitchen throwing up a Crip sign along the way. Lisa thought that David wasn’t the average fifteen- year- old. He was so wise for his age. I got so much love for him though, Lisa thought. He about to be a cold gangster, especially hanging around me. She smiled as she watched her young trainee. Lisa retreated to her room to sneak in a nap before Jasmine woke up. David closed himself up in the bathroom to smoke some weed. Catching a glimpse of his former self in the mirror, he understood that the street life was taking its toll on his young life. I’m supposed to be playing with my friends, being young and having fun, David thought as the realities of his life set in. Instead, I’m at my sister’s house recovering from murdering someone. David turned away from the mirror. He couldn’t stand to look at that stranger in the mirror any longer. Now, its time to embrace this new young man called Mister. He took out his lighter put the joint to his lips as he sat on the toilet. What am I going to do with my life? I’m in school still focused on being a writer. I got over a thousand dollars in my pocket and a zone and a half of crack. Fuck my dad. I’m helping my mom out, even though I don’t stay there. David was searching for something to be proud of.
