In volume three of the Westminster Society Journal, our contributors consider the important role of the local church in the Kingdom of God. Viewed dismissively as totally irrelevant by some and simply unnecessary by others, our authors argue precisely in the opposite direction: despite many critiques, the local church is beautiful, necessary, and deeply meaningful. She is after all, the Bride of Christ. Not only is the local church indispensable in the lives of ordinary believers, but it is the very means through which the Gospel of Jesus Christ is carried to our broken and hurting world. Volume one, "We Confess," is centered around the theme of the Westminster Confession of Faith; its history, purpose, and usage as the subordinate confessional standards of Reformed churches. Contributing authors are ministers in the EPC. The Westminster Society exists as a networking group within the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Devised originally as a forum in which ministers, elders, and laypersons could talk together about theology and church life, the Westminster Society desires to keep our denominational conversations centered around Scripture, as well as framed within the boundaries of our confessional standards. It is not a commissioned organization, mission, or committee of any court within the EPC. The Society holds a high view of the authority and infallibility of Scripture, as well as an ardent esteem for our subordinate standards. It encourages fellowship and unity in and among members of the EPC. Our motto, “ex animo” is the Latin phrase which means “from the heart.” This implies that we hope to confess and profess our doctrine sincerely and humbly as believers. The Westminster Society Journal, the publication of the Society, exists to encourage and stimulate theological discussion and peer-reviewed scholarly work within and among the ministers of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The Society will provide annual networking lunch opportunities at our General Assemblies for our members and visitors to gather around productive, in-depth theological conversations. More importantly, we hope to deepen friendships and foster professional collegiality among our ministers. Additionally, we seek to advocate for a strong view of the implementation and usage of our confessional standards in our churches and church courts. The Lord and the Rings: A Bible Study and Counseling Guide is a short booklet comprised of twelve basic Bible studies for Christian couples. It is also meant to be a supplemental guide for premarital or marital counseling. Each chapter of the twelve will need to be completed with both partners present, together if possible. A supplemental homework “project” is also given for each week. At the end of each set of four week studies, a pastoral counselling meeting and/or phone call should be arranged by the couple. Thus, there will be three counseling sessions of about two hours each. This brings the counseling to a total of about six hours. These in-person meetings or phone calls should help to review and solidify the materials presented in the Bible studies. If it is not possible to meet together personally with a minister or counselor, a video conference may also be set up. Although it may be helpful for each partner to have their own book, couples may choose to share one book for convenience if necessary. Please make every effort to complete all of the homework projects assigned. Since the Bible studies rely heavily on Scripture readings, couples should bring their Bibles to the counseling meetings or have them on hand for the video/phone calls.
