The eccentric visionary artist Forrest Bess (1911–1977) spent most of his life on the Texas coast working as a commercial fisherman. In his spare time, however, he painted prolifically, creating an extraordinary body of work rich with enigmatic symbolism. Bess experienced hallucinations that both frightened and intrigued him, and he incorporated images from these visions into small-scale abstract paintings starting in the mid-1940s.
His canvases attracted an underground following, and between 1949 and 1967, Betty Parsons organized six solo exhibitions of Bess’s work at her prominent New York City gallery. Since then, the art world has periodically rediscovered his work, most recently through a 2012 Whitney Biennial installation by American sculptor Robert Gober, which further exposed Bess’s psychological, medical, and religious theories. Forrest Bess: Seeing Things Invisible is the artist’s first museum retrospective with catalogue in the United States and offers a fresh look at Bess’s work and a better understanding of this curious and complicated artist.

An eclectic selection of twentieth-century artwork from the collection of legendary curator and museum director Walter Hopps, some with personal reminiscences by the artists themselves\nOver a fifty-year career that included stints at the famed Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and as director of the Pasadena Art Museum (now Norton Simon Museum), the Corcoran Gallery, and as founding director of the Menil Collection, the legendary curator Walter Hopps (1932–2005) established himself as a voracious and eclectic collector of twentieth-century art. Hopps together with his wife Caroline Huber—also a curator, as well as an artist—assembled an adventurous and diverse collection of art, a large portion of which has been donated or promised to the Menil Collection. Featuring sculpture and photography as well as drawings and paintings, and including work by Christo, Linda Connor, Beauford Delaney, Anne Doran, Marcel Duchamp, Walker Evans, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name a few, this book reveals the personal choices of two fine curatorial minds. Many of the more than fifty works illustrated have a story—often marvelous, sometimes humorous, and in several cases in the artist’s own words—of how they came to be in the collection. The Menil Collection , operated by the Menil Foundation, Inc., opened to the public in June 1987 as the primary repository of John and Dominique de Menil's private collection of more than 16,000 works from the Paleolithic era to the present day. This new addition to the Art Spaces series highlights the influential building designed by Renzo Piano which houses the collection. The interior galleries and storage areas were to be spacious enough to accommodate the vast collection but also discreet, incorporating elements from the de Menils' single-story house designed by Philip Johnson. Piano created a system of ceiling louvers, skylights and expansive windows which modulate the bright Texan sun and gently suffuse the galleries with what Dominique called 'living light'.
