Heavy hitters such as then-Mayor John "Pat" Dorrian, cable TV entrepreneur Jim Cownie, retired city planner Robert Mickle, New York architect Mario Gandelsonas and more were involved in the groundbreaking effort.More than 30 years later, the plan has held strong, and few skeptics remain. The book, "Des Moines Vision Plan" by longtime business reporter David C. Elbert, takes you through the many steps that made this vision come to life, from Gandelsonas' expertise to the collective foresight of Des Moines' leaders.
