Alma Lavenson was an associate and friend of such figures as Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. A talented photographer in her own right, she eagerly embraced the modernist aesthetics of precisionism and constructivism. This monumental publication rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman, whose photography was considered radical for its time. Anne Brigman (1869-1950)--a West Coast photographer, actress and poet--was one of the original members of the Photo-Secession. Because of Stieglitz's notoriously high standards and because of her distance from the other members in New York, it was a significant indicator of her artistic status to be asked to join the movement. In California, she was revered by West Coast photographers and her photography influenced many of her contemporaries.
