Animal models represent experimental investigations developed in one species for the purpose of studying phenomena in another species and provide numerous advantages for preclinical research. They allow scientists greater control and isolation of important experimental variables. Animal models are safe, reproducible strategies by which to evaluate and design new pharma­ cological treatment strategies, while also allowing direct central nervous system intervention to alter the course of the aberrant behavior. Animal models have been developed for a number of mental illnesses; in this particular domain, they hold the promise to shed light on the still obscure etiologies of these illnesses and ultimately to facilitate the development and testing of "cures. " Yet, true models of mental illness are difficult to develop, because mental illness may be a uniquely human phenomenon. It was based on these considerations that the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on the Psychobiology of Depression set out to sponsor a conference to review the status, problems, promises, and relevance of animal models to the clinical conditions of affective disorders. The conference was held in September 1986 and included participants from both within the Network as well as scientists and scholars from various disciplines relevant to the concerns of the conference. After the conference was held, it became clear to the organizers that the material presented could be helpful to a broader field of investigators, since a significant portion of the information has not been presented elsewhere or in the unified context of a monograph.

Die Rechtsprechung des Gerichtshofs der Europäischen Union hat in den vergangenen Jahren wichtige Entwicklungen im Bereich der Europäischen Grundrechte und der Grundfreiheiten vorangetrieben. Hierzu zählen auch Grundsatzfragen und strukturelle Weichenstellungen. Ebenso war die Rechtsprechung des Europäischen Gerichtshofs für Menschenrechte weiterhin ertragreich. Die Neuauflage des Standardlehrbuches nimmt im Einklang mit den neuen Entwicklungen eine Neustrukturierung vor und bringt das Werk auf den neuesten Rechtsstand. Die Darstellung des Lehrbuchs trägt insbesondere der wachsenden Bedeutung des Grundrechtsschutzes durch die Charta der Grundrechte der Europäischen Union Rechnung. Das Konzept des Lehrbuchs wurde beibehalten. Insbesondere bleibt es bei der bewährten Ergänzung der systematischen Betrachtung durch eingearbeitete Fälle und Lösungen. Adressaten des Lehrbuchs sind Studierende, Referendare und Wissenschaftler, darüber hinaus aber auch die Gerichte, Behörden und Verbände sowie alle sonstigen am Europarecht Interessierten.

The subject of petrology has undergone a revolution within the last decade as a result of the recently developed awareness by geoloaiats of the role of plate tectonics in petrogenesis. Field examinations have included studies-by means of deep sea cores dredge samples and submersibl~f igneous rocles formed at mid-ocean rifts. The distribution and origin of igneous and metamorphic rocks at convergent plate junctions have been more closely defined in terms of plate tectonics. The occurrence of sedimentary materials can now be related to plate tectonic regimes. Laboratory studies are now able to duplicate most of the conditions upon and within the earth. Mineral syntheses have defined the general pressure temperature and compositional limits within which most of the common rock-forming minerals can exist. Isotopid studies can now furnish a date of formation of igneous and metamorphic rocks as well as the temperatures at which many organisms lived in sedimentary environments. In addition improved classification of igneous and sedimentary rocks now yields more meaningful subdivisions and is more closely related to the method of origin than were earlier systems. The aim has been to present a summary of the more significant portions of both the older and the more recent literature at a level appropriate to the college sophomore or junior who is exposed to a first course in petrology. Literature sources are given at the end of each chapter for those who wish to pursue some of the subjects presented. It is assumed that the student has an understanding of elementary chemistry crystallography and mineralogy as well as some facility with the petrographic microscope (although this is not critical to an understanding of the general concepts).
