Just as Aperture's classic Masters of Photography series introduces audiences to the work of established great photographers, this first in a planned series of three-volume boxed sets offers an affordable, beautifully produced introduction to three emerging talents: Kelli Connell, Justin Newhall and Brian Ulrich. Via digital manipulation, Kelli Connell uses a single individual to represent two sides of an evolving relationship, the self and the other. Justin Newhall has spent the past few years following the Lewis and Clark Trail through the Dakotas, Montana and beyond. His lyrical work focuses on the intersections of tourism, history and mythology. Brian Ulrich shoots in malls, grocery stores and warehouses, documenting the bounty of commercial goods available to consumers and the peculiar behavior it seems to bring out. From cathartic to catatonic, his shoppers may be caught up in fantasy or quite simply overwhelmed, but they are certainly familiar. This slipcased box set will include three volumes, each with 56 pages and 25 color images.

Chicago, like many urban centers throughout the world, has recently undergone a surge in new construction, grafting a new layer of architectural experimentation onto those of past eras. In early 2007, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, with the support of U.S. Equities Realty, invited Michael Wolf as an artist-in-residence to document this phenomenon. Bringing his unique perspective on changing urban environments to a city renowned for its architectural legacy, Wolf chose to photograph the central downtown area, focusing specifically on issues of voyeurism and the contemporary urban landscape in flux. For more than a decade, Victoria Sambunaris (born 1964) has crossed the United States with her five-by-seven wooden field camera and sheets of color negative film. Traveling seemingly every road nationwide, Sambunaris has described herself as having “an unrelenting curiosity to understand the American landscape and our place in it.” This first monograph on Sambunaris’ work consists of two handsome hardback volumes. The first includes a retrospective selection of her images from 2000 to 2013; the second documents the artist’s collected professional ephemera as a photographer and researcher. Included in this fascinating assortment of documents are images of books on geology and history, maps, artifacts such as mineral specimens, journals and road logs, as well as her small photographic sketches. An essay from MOCP Director Natasha Egan provides an insightful overview of this ardent chronicler of contemporary America.
