Shandor is a historical novel which closely follows the exciting "stranger-than-fiction" true life adventures of a Belgian family relocating to Russia in 1900. Marshana Martinet accompanies her parents to the wilderness of the Ukrainian steppe where her father establishes large-scale mining operations. With her father, Marshana experiences new adventures, even dangerous snowstorms and wild animal attacks. After attending local Russian schools, she is sent back to a Belgian boarding school by her jealous mother. Marshana is home for the summer when her father's carriage is bombed by a Russian revolutionary. Her father's throat injuries necessitate going to a specialist in Vienna, where Marshana meets handsome, enchanting Shandor. Love blooms, but her father says, "You may not marry an Austrian!", setting into motion a frustrating bizarre chain of events. The family saga spans several generations who face vivid military hazards from the Russian revolutions through the cruel post-World War II Soviet occupation in Austria and rural Czechoslovakia. However, there is a balance of tenderness, happiness, and humor, as well as a rich flavoring of colorful cultural features to also enjoy.
