<p>Many volumes have been written on the discoveries of the Northmen in America in the eleventh century since the Icelander Thormoour Torfaeus published his "History of Vinland" in 1705.  For two hundred and forty years historians and students of the sagas have disagreed in their identifications of the various landfalls made by the voyagers to Vinland, although the evidence of Norse discoveries and explorations on the American coast, and for Norse contacts with the aborigines of North America, is clear and conclusive.  Theory has challenged theory; yet none has won complete acceptance.  The original sagas, on which these theories, old and new, have been founded, outlive all interpretations of them.  The geographical and topographical data which they contain, though not so complete or precise as we could wish, afford firmer ground than many of the speculations - often partly inspired by wishful thinking - which have been spun around them.  The traditions written down by thirteenth- and fourteenth-century chroniclers still survive, and lend themselves to more solid and reasonable interpretation.  Author Reman, an experienced seaman and navigator, places the eleventh-century landings of the Vikings in America at newly determined locations.  He obtains his evidence by a painstaking examination of the original texts of the Old Norse sagas.  Reman also shows that the explorations of Erik the Red and Leif and Thorvald Eriksson were planned rediscoveries.  These are just some of the problems the author attacks in this book, a work which, according to Editor Arthur G. Brodeur, is a very valuable contribution to the scholarship of an eternally vexed subject.</p>
