Cloaked in its brilliant mantle of brick, fiery terracotta and red sandstone, the University of Pennsylvania Library stands as the mature-period masterwork of Philadelphia's premier Victorian-era architect, Frank Furness. Conceived in consultation with two eminent library theoreticians, the library plan evolved from practical experience with the inadequacies of nineteeth-century library buildings; the result was a modern factory for learning, a machine for the use and storage of books. Furness's rationalized plan, expressed on the exterior as a bold design, was challenged for decades, and anti-Victorian sentiment threatened the edifice with demolition as late as the 1960s. Renewed appreciation has since come full circle, however, culminating in a dramatic interior restoration by the eminent Philadelphia practice, Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. Frank Furness's academic monument thus stands today as a defining architectural landmark of Philadelphia.

In 1993 Rachel Whiteread created a work of art which was hailed as one of the greatest public sculptures made by an English artist in the twentieth century. Whiteread's concrete and plaster cast of an entire house in the East End of London attracted equal measures of praise, wonder and controversy. Her monumental sculpture, on view when she won the Turner Prize, attracted some 3,000 visitors a day before it was demolished in January 1994. This book is made in collaboration with the Artangel Trust and provides a unique document of this remarkable work.
Photographs and working drawings chart House's progress from construction to demolition. Six distinguished authors contribute their responses and the book also surveys the whole spectrum of critical reaction to the work.

Rachel Whiteread: House

Originally an addition to the end of the Psalter or Book of Psalms, the first separate Book of Hours known in England was attributed to the artist William de Brailes between 1230 and 1260. By the end of the 13th century the Book of Hours had become a favourite prayerbook of ordinary people throughout Western Europe and in the years that followed its popularity spread. Often small and highly decorated, these books provide an insight into the daily life of the Middle Ages.
