I was in trouble. Students hated my class teaching at a Middle School and I thought about leaving my career. One day, I decided to teach them as simply as possible, so I used paper and pen and created simple rules. IT WORKED!!!! Of 168 students, they averaged 48% improvement over 4 weeks, pretest to post test. (So, a student might have 30% pretest and improved to 78%.) Three students went from 0% pretest to 100% post test. Add Subtract Multiply Divide and Time appears easy, but if you want to do math without a calculator, it's not. So, why isn't it easy? First, we have become so used to using calculators, that to not is a different way to think, especially subtraction. Next, we do all of add before subtract. You might want to change that. So, try it without the workbook. You might like it. Just try it.

You get to learn Decimals and my favorite, Fractions. There are a few places you might want to skip, but at least try them. Then comes Percent and beginning Algebra. I started writing Fractions before anything else (including Add Subtract etc). I used it with my classes in Aurora, CO and it began the story of my writing about math. I hope you like it as much as much as I did.
