Voici rassemblées les chroniques écrites par Jean Dutourd dans France Soir entre 1976 et 1978... des pensées incorrectes sous une plume acérée ! 
La chronique est un art qui tient du lancer de la grenade et de l'introduction du suppositoire. Je veux dire par là qu'il faut bien viser, afin que l'engin qu'on envoie éclate à la place exacte où il doit éclater, et fasse tous les dégâts souhaitables. Quant à l'introduction du suppositoire, c'est une manœuvre tout aussi délicate et qui ne demande pas moins de doigté. Cela consiste à aborder le sujet de biais, de la façon la plus anodine possible, et à arriver par une gradation presque invisible à énoncer en queue d'article une chose énorme qui, dite d'entrée, aurait paru choquante ou ridicule. Quand on met autant de soin, de sincérité, de rigueur, à composer un éditorial ou une critique qu'à rédiger quelques pages d'un livre, on est récompensé. Beaucoup d'articles finissent par faire une petite œuvre en marge de la grande. Grâce au journalisme et à ses heureuses contraintes, certains auteurs ont eu l'occasion d'exercer des facultés ou d'exprimer des aspects de leur talent qu'ils auraient peut-être dédaignés s'ils n'avaient pas eu besoin d'argent.
