C. F. A. Voysey (Architectural Monographs No 19)

Charles Francis Annesley Voysey, 1857-1941, had an immense reputation in the 1890s and early years of this century. His houses, his furniture and his textiles were greatly admired and widely imitated. But with the outbreak of World War I his architectural career came to an end. He eked out a rather precarious existence, designing textiles and wallpapers, as he faded from the public's memory. In the 1930s Voysey was rediscovered by John Betjeman, the architect writer Raymond McGrath and Nicholas Peusner, McGrath and Peusner treated Voysey as if he was a modern, born before his time. He was nothing of the sort; he was a great 19th-century architect, the greatest Victorian domestic architect. Voysey emerged as an architect with a distinctive style in the 1890s. His work was widely publicised in avant garde periodicals like "The Studio" as well as in Continental journals. Intellectuals quickly seized upon the idea of the Voysey House, H.G. Wells commissioned a Voysey House. Other Voysey clients included well known writers, publishers and artists. Voysey, unlike many architects of his day, still has much to teach us. His architecture is gentle, eminently civilized, but never dull or timid. His houses were built of simple materials, they related perfectly to sites. Voysey, as an architect, was a green.

The most important metal-and-glass structure of the 19th century, the Palais des Machines dominated the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition, whose complex of structures included Eiffel's famous tower. Designed to proclaim the modernity and industrial strength of France, the gallery occupied almost the entire width of the Champ de Mars. Its elegant span exceeded that of any previous building and its curtain walls, while anticipated in the great railway sheds of the era, were the largest of the 19th century. In this monograph Stuart Durant examines the Palais des Machines in the light of its precedents and the career of its designer, and Angus Low concludes with a structural appraisal of this powerful symbol of industrialization. The book re-establishes the true significance of the building, demonstrating its interaction between the thinking of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and technological innovations of the period.

Christopher Dresser was the first modern designer as well as a botanist, theorist and traveller. Dresser knew that mass production called for a new approach to design. Increasing wealth brought with it insatiable demands for novelty and variety. Dresser was able to meet these without transgressing the conventions of good taste. His best work is timeless - and not merely within the confines of the machine age. Dresser ran a large design office for over 40 years and kept pace with changes in taste. He nevertheless maintained his artistic integrity. he wrote perceptively about design. His "Art of Decorative Design", 1862, is the earliest book which actually shows how design can be originated. His book on Japan is the first account, by a Westerner, of the true nature of Japanese crafts. The product of many years of research, this detailed study contains much new and revealing biographical material. Although many of Dresser's designs have become well known, his thinking on design has never been seen before in relation to the intellectual infrastructure and his complex era.
