Taking an approach that is equal parts anthropological and art historical, this lavishly illustrated volume offers a rare look at the art, artifacts, and culture of the Naga people, an ethnic group spanning several tribes native to northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar. The book seeks to shed light on this geographically isolated and historically insular people, identifying cultural aspects and artistic traditions that are common among all Naga tribes, as well as ways in which the tribes differ. The works featured include textiles, baskets, wood carving, pottery, metalwork, jewelry, and beadwork, and make use of a wide range of materials such as glass, stone, metal, wood, shell, seeds, bone, and hair. Archival photography is used to place clothing, accessories, and ornaments within the cultural practices of the Naga.

A comprehensive look at an important member of the artistic vanguard of late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe In this beautifully illustrated book, Michel Draguet, an internationally recognized authority on fin-de-siècle art, offers an enlightening examination of the life and art of Belgian Symbolist painter Fernand Khnopff (1858–1921). Khnopff achieved widespread acclaim during his lifetime for his moody, dreamlike paintings, as well as his numerous commissioned portraits, designs for costumes and sets for the theater and opera, photography, sculpture, book illustrations, and writings. Khnopff was a reclusive personality, and in 1900 he focused his attention on the design and construction of a lavish, secluded home and studio in Brussels, a structure that became deeply entwined with the artist’s work and sense of self. Although the house was demolished in 1936, Draguet uses new archival research to reconstruct its spaces and explore the home as emblematic of the artist, guiding the reader through Khnopff’s very personal world and analyzing his art in the context of its generative surroundings.

The Berbers, also known as Azamigh, are an ethnic group indigenous to North and West Africa. For hundreds of years, Berber tribes of Morocco have created intricate jewelry to adorn the bodies of Berber women not merely to aesthetic ends, but to convey information about the positions of women within their tribal worlds, including messages about fertility, wealth, and social hierarchy. This beautifully illustrated book offers a glimpse at objects from a particularly fine collection of Berber jewelry from across Morocco. Most often made of silver, Berber jewelry frequently incorporates coral, turquoise, enamelwork, and glass. The objects featured here include ear and head ornaments as well as traditional tizerais, large, triangular clasps designed to hold garments in place. Berber Adornments also offers a brief history of Berber culture, with a focus on ornament in the context of the status of Berber women.

James Ensor's painting of 1887, "The Temptation of St. Anthony," now in The Museum of Modern Art's collection, established the artist as one of the boldest painters of all his contemporaries. Ensor (1860-1949) was a major figure in the Belgian avant-garde of the late nineteenth century and an important precursor to the development of Expressionism in the early twentieth, yet his work is underappreciated in the United States, and far too little seen. The Belgian artist, illustrator, sculptor, and photographer Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921) became a popular society portraitist in the 1880s, using elements that had served him well as an avant-garde symbolist painter: visual realism and a mood of silence, isolation, and reverie. As in the provocative yet hauntingly beautiful Portrait of Jeanne Kéfer, which is the focus of this book, he frequently posed his models leaning against a closed door, flattening the space and resulting in a meditative, hermetically sealed image. Jeanne Kéfer was the daughter of a composer friend of the artist, and Khnopff deftly captured the child's vulnerability to the outside world in the small gesture of her tiny thumb catching the edge of her bow. The book places this painting in the historical context of Khnopff's times and social milieu, such as the advent of symbolism as a literary and artistic movement and the influence of James McNeill Whistler. The analysis of the portrait is supported by a stunning array of related paintings, details, and technical photographs. Finally, the author uses Khnopff's portraits as a springboard for a broader discussion of symbolist art.

Mouvement provocateur et dynamique, le Surréalisme déclenche au 20ème siècle un renouvellement esthétique et éthique. Les hommes ne sont pas les seuls à avoir rendu vivants ce courant et ses transgressions : de nombreuses femmes en furent des actrices majeures mais néanmoins mésestimées par les musées et minorées par le marché de l'art. Le Surréalisme offrit à celles-ci un cadre d'expression et de créativité qui n'eut sans doute pas d'équivalent dans les autres mouvements d'avant-garde. Pourtant, c'est souvent en s'appropriant et en étendant des thèmes initiés par les « leaders » du mouvement qu'elles exprimèrent leur liberté. C'est aussi en se dégageant de ce qui devint parfois une doxa surréaliste qu'elles s'affirmèrent. « Tout contre » le Surréalisme, c'est ainsi que l'on pourrait définir leurs positions diversifiées et complexes à l'égard du mouvement. Des années trente aux années soixante-dix, le "surréalisme féminin" forme des constellations éphémères, au gré de ralliements au mouvement souvent temporaires mais aussi d'amitiés qui se nouent hors de ce cadre. L'imaginaire de ces artistes n'est pas aligné sur celui des figures masculines du mouvement. Leurs pratiques, fréquemment interdisciplinaires - picturales, photographiques, sculpturales, cinématographiques, littéraires... - expriment leur volonté d'échappées belles au-delà des normes hétérosexuelles et des frontières géographiques. C'est une cartographie d'un mouvement éclaté et mondialisé que l'exposition esquisse en évoquant les foyers belge, mexicain, britannique, américain, praguois et français du Surréalisme que ces femmes ont enrichis, passant parfois de l'un à l'autre.
