He was active in music, studying with John Cage and Henry Cowell and is the author of many books of poetry including Buster Keaton Enters Into Paradise (Left Hand) and Book About Love And Death (Something Else), also available from SPD. From his early (1964) essay on Intermedia, which gave the term to the language, up through the his influential essay on the concept of an allusive referential, the impulse of his work was to describe rather than to prescribe. A fluxperson, artist, poet, composer, and scholar of intermedia, Higgins also authored Pattern Poetry: Guide to an Unknown Literature, among numerous other works. He died in October of 1998. Dick Higgins from the Foreword to Modernism Since Postmodernism: "Of course kitsch can be fun. Already 125 years ago, Rimbaud recognized this when, in the second section of A Season in Hell, he speaks of liking dumb paintings, door panels, stage sets, backdrops for acrobats, street signs, old-time literature and such-like. Who doesn't?... 'Kitschspeak' is the term I use...for the fashionable kitsch language about the arts, sometimes delightful for a while, as with Derrida, for instance, but ultimately locked so closely into fashion and the world of second-rate, derivative art that it is all but impossible to use with major work and thus destined to pass into academia or oblivion once its novelty has passed... There are, of course, many schools of postmodernism--and they are just that, schools--but for a preliminary discussion there is no need to identify all of them. [One sort is] pop-academic, in which the professors cite each other to build up a lattice of assumptions into a polemic that may or may not have any correspondence with the realities of the arts that lie outside what is known in their trade as 'the discussion.' This important publication provides a first time document and re-visitation of artist Alison Knowles classic Fluxus project, The Big Book (1967). An eight-foot tall walk-in construction, it was comprised of a title page and eight moveable pages anchored to a metal spine, each equipped with casters. The book contained a stove, a telephone, a bed, a toilet, a library, a guestbook, a gallery with works by artist friends, a lush meadow, a ventilator and other assorted utensils. It was given its first public airing at the Something Else Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Following this first exhibition, the book travelled to various venues in Europe, Canada and the United States, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Frankfurt am Main and The Jewish Museum, New York. In the course of these travels, the book s condition gradually deteriorated so that by the time it reached the final venue, only a few pages remained.
