Philippic I, delivered between 351 B.C. - 350 B.C., was the first speech by a prominent politician against the growing power of Philip II of Macedon. Along with the other Philippics of Demosthenes', it is arguably one of the finest deliberative speeches from antiquity. The present volume provides the first commentary in English on the Philippics since 1907 and promises to encourage more study of this essential Greek orator. Aiming his commentary at advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students, Cecil Wooten addresses rhetorical and stylistic matters, historical background, and grammatical problems. In addition to a full commentary on Philippic I, this volume includes essays that outline Philippics II and III, set them in their historical context, and emphasize the differences between these later speeches and the first.

Demosthenes was punched in the face by Meidias in the theater at Athens in 348 B.C. His prosecution speech for this offence is one of the most intriguing texts in Greek literature. It tells the story of his long feud with Meidias and gives much valuable information about Athenian law and festivals, and about the concept of insolent behavior which the Greeks call hubris. This edition presents a larger number of manuscripts than earlier editors have used, and is supplemented with a double apparatus criticus giving testimonia and variant readings. It also provides a full introduction on historical, legal, literary, and textual matters, a complete translation of the speech, and a more detailed commentary than any previously published.

This volume, containing orations 1-18, is the first of four volumes intended to replace the previous Oxford Classical Text of Demosthenes, begun in 1901. It is based on fresh and thorough study of the evidence by Professor Dilts, an accomplished Greek scholar.

This new edition corrects shortcomings of earlier editions by providing a text which incorporates neglected or unavailable material from Greek manuscripts, recently published papyri, and quotations from the orations by rhetoricians dating from antiquity through to the Byzantine period. All this information is presented in notes in Greek and Latin, which will not only allow convenient access to evidence for the text but will also provide references to ancient and medieval interpretations of the orations.

Demosthenes wrote for the courts, both for political trials in which he was involved and for other cases in which he acted as ghost-writer for plaintiff or defendant, and his lawcourt speeches give an unrivalled glimpse of the daily life of ancient Athens. He also played a central role in education in Greece and Rome from the Hellenistic period onward, and was imitated by the greatest of Roman orators, Cicero.
