Avoyelles Parish was one of the original parishes created by an act of the Louisiana Territorial Legistlature in 1807. It was created out of the old Spanish Military Post, La Poste des Avoyelles. In 1807, the American system of government began replacing the old Spanish post system. The Spanish era commandant position became the parish judge, the alcolades became the Police Jury. This book is one of the most detailed histories of Avoyelles, this book covers every aspect of Avoyelles Parish Government, Schools, and organizations from 1807 until 1907. Several hundred photographs are included. A synopsis of minutes from the Avoyelles Police Jury beginning in 1816 are reprinted with notes and supporting photos added. Damon Veach called this book one of the best collections of Avoyelles Parish historical facts available. The book also includes several 19th century descriptions of Avoyelles from various writers, travelers and adventurers.

The Queen of the West plied the waters of the Mississippi, Atchafalaya and Red Rivers during the Civil War, under two different flags and three different venues. At first, she carried civilian passengers and freight in the antebellum years. Then she was retrofitted as a Union war ship. She was a key in the success in action at Memphis, Vicksburg and the Yazoo. Finally, after being captured at Fort DeRussy on the Red River, she floated under the Confederate flag until she was destroyed. Inside is the illustrated story of the ship and some of the brave men, of both armies, who make up her story. There is the story when she was attacked near Simmesport, Louisiana and the Union captain burned three plantations along the Atchafalaya River in revenge. There is the story of when its pilot, suspected of being sympathetic to the South, grounded her right in front of a heavily fortified fort on Red River. And there is the story of the its captain, at the young age of 19, who won the admiration of Admiral Porter and General Sherman themselves. The compiler of this book lives near the site where the Queen of the West went from the Union to the Confederate flag. The author’s grandmother’s family was at Barbin’s Landing on Red River, which her father Eugene Michot at one time managed, and was the pivotal point in the life of the Queen of the West.

Avoyelles Parish, with its location near the junction of the three main waterways of the Atchafalaya, Mississippi and Red Rivers, sat at the center of much activity during the Civil War. And with more than 1000 able bodies young men in its population, Avoyelles was a major supplier of troops to the Confederate cause. Several of those Avoyelles men spent time at Vicksburg, some during the great siege, others passing through to other battles, and some even being detained as prisoners of war by the Yankees. Avoyelleans at Vicksburg is an attempt to outline the names of these men from Avoyelles and the time they spent at Vicksburg.
