Create and Be Recognized is the first survey of a compelling, always surprising art form -- outsider photography. Presented here is the work of seventeen largely self-taught artists who have used photography or photographic elements in their creations, including such luminaries as Adolf Wolfli, Howard Finster, and Henry Darger, as well as discoveries from little known, equally dramatic artists. As with most outsider art, the work here is fuelled by singular passions, marginalized mindsets, and extreme circumstances, falling outside mainstream picture-making. Employing collage (affixing photos or reproductions to a background), photocollage (photographs cut and pasted together to form a new whole), and tableaux (works based on manipulation and staging), the artists here present work that is, by turns, lyrical and frightening, and always fascinating. Published to coincide with a major touring exhibition of the same name originating at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Create and Be Recognized documents an emerging and important facet of contemporary photography.

Founded by Ansel Adams, directed by Minor White, and staffed by such luminaries as Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Lisette Model, and Edward Weston, the first fine-art photography department in the United States was created in 1946 at the California School of Fine Arts (now known as the San Francisco Art Institute). Under White's leadership and against a backdrop of revolutions in photography as an art form, this dynamic faculty developed the modern photography curriculum, bringing a new academic pedigree to the medium and establishing the future of photography education. Eden or paradise, that place of perfect happiness, is an ideal that resonates across times and cultures. Picturing Eden assembles the work of contemporary photographers looking for their own paradises, some from a place of contemplation and restoration, some from a place of loneliness and despair. The differences between the heavens they seek and the comparatively dark, messy earth they are limited to charge their work with both political and environmental concerns--this is no heaven. And yet sometimes they make it seem so. By looking at the notion of paradise and the garden through the photographic lens, the book highlights the original lost innocence and the ongoing significance of a humanistic environment, and considers paradise's place in the history of art. Exhibition catalogue from the Groninger Museum on the works of Ruud van Empel (b 1958). Van Empel has developed a unique working method within digital photography. The images he compiles display a paradisiacal world that has never existed in the form shown. This world is populated by children and dreamy adolescents as a personification of innocence, which is one of the most important themes of Van Empel s work. But innocence is always vulnerable, and the longing for paradise is an all-too-human illusion that will be disturbed sooner or later. From hundreds of fragments adopted from digital photos, Van Empel compiles new images that seem very life-like and realistic, but also conjure up a world that has never existed.
