The British Museum's extensive collection of Wedgwood ware contains some of the finest specimens ever made by the factory. Through a close study of the most stunning pieces in the collection, Aileen Dawson reviews the remarkable history of the factory from its foundation up to modern times. Since 1756, the British Museum has acquired, by gift, bequest or purchase, some 90 works of portrait sculpture. Presented in a variety of media, most of the sitters are eminent statesmen, scholars and authors and many of the works are by sculptors of the first rank, yet the pieces have rarely been on public display and are correspondingly little known. The portraits have been closely studied and catalogued in this illustrated volume. For each piece, Aileen Dawson considers the gensis, material, place in the artist's oeuvre, and history in the museum.

The British Museum collection of French Porcelain numbers almost 300 pieces. This is the first time that has been fully catalogued, although its origins go back to the last century. In 1897 A.W. Franks bequeathed to the Museum a wide variety of soft-and hard-paste porcelains, ranging in date from the beginnings of French manufacturing activity to Franks' later years. The collection has grown continuously through gifts, bequests and purchases, notably Sir Bernard Eckstein's bequest of 18th-century painted Sevres porcelains. Recent acquisitions include both 19th-and 20th-century pieces.

French Porcelain: A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection

An extremely well produced catalogue which presents 185 pieces from the British Museum's magnificent collection of English and Irish Delftware. They include a wide array of domestic crockery, including bowls, plates, jugs, tankards, and vases, and are decorated with an interesting range of historical and orientalizing scenes. Each piece is photographed in full colour with with accompanying descriptions and explanations of the decoration, whilst an introduction surveys the delfware industry.

Porcelain has been made in Worcester since 1751 and the factory's products are still amongst the most keenly collected English porcelain today. Unlike many other porcelain factories established in Britain from the mid-eighteenth century, Worcester produced a wide range of domestic and ornamental pieces, catering to an elite market of aristocrats and landowners, many of whom were newly wealthy and keen to display their prosperity. This beautiful book showcases over 100 of the most important and attractive pieces of eighteenth-century Worcester porcelain in the collection of the British Museum. They date from the period 1751-83, from the factory's founding by Dr. John Wall to a few years after his death in 1776. Its particular strengths are its dated pieces, as well as many decorated in London at the famous Soho workshop of James Giles. It also includes early pieces closely based on Chinese and Japanese porcelains, examples of the charming blue and white painted or printed wares, and many of the characteristic and sought-after pieces painted with flowers and birds against a dark blue ground. Many of the pieces are fully illustrated in color here for the first time. A concise overview of the Worcester factory and its production methods in the eighteenth century is followed by superb illustrations and informative texts, including new research about each of the featured pieces, making this book both an enlightening introduction to the subject for the non-specialist and an essential reference for the collector.
