Prisonnier de son milieu familial rigide et fermé, il passe le plus clair de son temps à garder les cochons auxquels il parle et se confie. Avec ce premier roman, Geneviève Damas fait preuve d’une maîtrise remarquable en dépeignant d’une manière aussi juste un univers rempli d’humanité, de compassion et de silences. « Tout à coup j’ai pensé que la vie était belle. C’est tout à fait mérité. Le roman est intense et émouvant. L’histoire nous happe dès les premières lignes. Même si l’auteure est Belge, l’univers de ce roman n’est pas sans nous rappeler celui du Torrent d’Anne Hébert ou d’autres œuvres issues de notre littérature comme La Fille laide d’Yves Thériault, par exemple.
