Ted Dakin was born in the 1930s in the Lancashire cotton town of Wigan, and grew up in a world of poverty, with a poor education at a tough Catholic school ruled by Owd Hector Wainwright's fist and cane.  He has a host of delightful tales about the goings on of the community, describing skiving Mass to avoid wearing a new suit so tight it felt like a second skin, of his Dad, the reformed hypochondriac, self-taught herbalist and boxing trainer, and of the extraordinary Albert Crabtree, singer/coal miner, with his infamous renditions of "Danny Boy".  These nostalgic tales recreate the unity and values of a community and a time, sadly, long gone.  But as Ted's father rightly said, "Nothing lasts forever...Time changes all things and everybody".
