Like a ship captain's logbook, Log records observations of one's surroundings, in particular of movements in architecture and contemporary culture. Log fills the void in American architectural publishing that has existed since the closing of ANY and the journal Assemblage by providing a venue for criticism and a discussion of contemporary work and ideas. Edited by Cynthia Davidson (editor of ANY), Log includes articles by established scholars and critics as well as the work of emerging writers. Log 2 features essays by Bernard Khoury, Phyllis Lambert, Julie Rose, and Sarah Whiting, reflecting the diversity of the cross-cultural discussion on the condition of architecture and contemporary culture.

Log 8: Toward a Critique of Sustainable Architecture and Landscape ------ The shelter (primitive hut) that became known as architecture first allowed humanity to sustain itself against nature. Today, architecture built to shelter humans from nature, must also protect nature from humans. It is architecture itself that must be sustainable. But what myths, clichs, and assumptions sustain sustainability itself? When is green architecture good architecture? When is it not? Why, for instance, is it impossible to say no to sustainability (is sustainability the new political correctness)? Is it possible to theorize sustainability, or even to pose a critique of something so loosely defined?
