Written by Elizabeth B. Custer, wife of General George Armstrong Custer, Tenting on the Plains begins in the closing days of the Civil War.  Before the victory parades had even finished, General Custer was assigned to lead the occupation of Texas.  Texas was at the extreme of the lawless frontier, and had been spared much of the worst fighting.  Its citizens hadn’t yet embraced the South’s capitulation, and the 26-year old General and Civil War hero was now charged with the daunting task of pacifying a population still hostile to the Union.  From Texas, we follow George and Elizabeth Custer to Kansas, where Custer was next asked to quell the Indians who were up in arms against the westward emigrants.  This fascinating story allows us to experience history in the words and visions of those who made it rather than era biased interpretations. The honeymoon of Elizabeth Bacon and George Armstrong Custer was interrupted in 1864 by his call to duty with the Army of the Potomac. Her entreaties to be allowed to travel along set the pattern of her future life. From that time onward, she did indeed accompany General Custer on all his major assignments except the summer Indian campaigns, “the only woman,” she said, “who always rode with the regiment.” This is the story of Elizabeth B. Custer (1842–1933), told in her own words. She was not only a housewife on the Plains; she was whatever the occasion demanded: nurse to a group of frostbitten soldiers; any-hour-of-the-day hostess to the regiment, since her husband was not fond of entertaining; the garrison’s favorite confidante (and many an interesting story she has to tell); and would-be Indian fighter whenever the women of the regiment had to be left alone. Boots and Saddles also offers a gentle, loving portrait of George Armstrong Custer, husband and man, by the person who knew him best. Elizabeth Custer’s absolute devotion to him is revealed in every line of her story, which ends, appropriately enough, with the day on which she received the news of the disaster at Little Big Horn.

Elizabeth Custer, the devoted wife the general who would fall at the Battle of Little Big Horn, had no illusions about what would be required to force southern Plains Indians onto reservations. Drawing on her husband's letters to her, she describes the Seventh Cavalry's risky winter campaign that culminated in November 1868 with the capture of a Cheyenne village on the Washita River.

Libby accompanies the men on their hunting expeditions, relates the stories of scouts and teamsters, and always gives a human aspect to a difficult juncture in Custer's career.
