VINCENT VAN GOGH (1853-1890), whose paintings now command millions of dollars at each auction, died impoverished at the early age of 37. He left behind an astonishing body of work which included several hundred paintings created over a short period and a large quantity of drawings and sketches. Born in the Netherlands, the son of a Protestant pastor, Van Gogh was emotionally unstable and suffered frequent bouts of severe mental depression (which resulted in his eventual suicide). Although frequently linked with the Impressionists he has no real artistic connection with them and his work stands as a highly individual expression of his disturbed temperament. His most notable works, which were created in the last three and a half years of his life, are of his friends, acquaintances, and the landscape around Arles in southern France. The miracle of Van Gogh is that he was able to produce such a dominating body of deeply moving images while living a life of ultimate desperation in an increasing state of mental imbalance.

CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926) is generally considered to be the central figure in the development of the Impressionist movement. In a career spanning 70 years during which he produced many hundreds of paintings, there can be found a number which are among the most famous in the history of modern European art. Monet rejected the brushwork technique used by the academic traditionalists to create dramatically fresh images of nature in its various forms and moods. His later home in Giverny, on the bank of the Seine near Paris, where he lived for three decades of his life, became the focal point for some of the most celebrated of these works and includes the waterlilies series known as the Nymphéas. A notable feature of his work was the treatment of single subjects in extended series, such as Poplars and Grain Stacks as well as views of the façade of Rouen Cathedral, seen in various stages as the light changed throughout the day. His influence on painting in this century can hardly be over-emphasized.

LEONARDO (1452-1519), along with Michelangelo and Raphael, is one of the greatest representative figures of the Italian Renaissance and is acknowledged to be perhaps the most complete universal genius in history as artist, scientist, engineer and inventor. As a result his oeuvre where painting is concerned is remarkably limited and much disputed by art historians. Nevertheless, he left a unique legacy to the world which encompassed the entire creative impetus and spiritual dynamic of the Italian Renaissance.

PAUL CÉZANNE (1839-1906) is an important figure in the progress of modern European painting. In his dedicated concern with form and structure, he stands apart from the mainstream of Impressionist painting, extending its range into a new art of visual analysis. Cézanne, sensitive and shy, shunned the Parisian café society of his fellow artists, preferring to live and work alone in his native Provence which provided the inspiration for so many of his paintings. Less immediately appealing to a wider audience than, for example, Monet and Degas, Cézanne is nonetheless of immense importance through the influence he exerted on so many of the artists who followed him, such as Picasso and Matisse. Blessed with financial independence through the efforts of his banker father, he fortunately enjoyed a freedom to pursue his art without the demands of making a living felt by so many of his fellow artists.

MARY STEVENSON CASSATT (1844-1926) was a highly unlikely figure to have become the first American painter to achieve a notable place in the development of the first modern avant-garde international movement in art. The privileged daughter of a well-to-do Philadelphian broker, Cassatt was encouraged to paint as part of the social attributes of many young girls of her class. This was not equal to her need to become a serious painter as she enrolled in the Philadelphia Academy, beginning a career which resulted in her eventual participation in the development of Impressionism and a close friendship with Degas. Her first great interest was in the work of the great masters of Italian and Spanish art; but on her arrival in Paris, she came to admire new young painters such as Courbet and Manet. Her studies were successful and she exhibited in the Salon of 1872, meeting Degas in 1874 and exhibiting with the Impressionists in 1879. The subject that most captured her interest was the relationship between mother and child and much of her oeuvre is devoted to exploring the many aspects of this theme. Her haughty independence isolated her from most of the Impressionist group but she was an important conduit through which French art was introduced to the American public.

Edgar Degas (Treasures of Art)

EDGAR DEGAS (1834-1917) became a professional painter through a change in his family's fortunes. He grew up the privileged son of wealthy and cultured parents and despite his interest in art was destined for a career in law until the failure of the family bank. More than any of his famous contemporaries, while possibly excluding Manet, Degas was a traditionalist painter. He was dismissive of the Impressionist technique as a method, although he participated in most of the group's early exhibitions. As a result, he is more closely allied in popular understanding with Impressionism than he himself ever wished to be. Best known for his paintings of ballet Dancers, Degas was an urbane and savagely witty man, choosing his subjects from the cultured society life of Paris in which he was a well known figure.
