<p>The story of the rise and fall of the New World's first crowned king, Henry Christophe of Haiti, this is an absorbing account of a far too little known episode in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Born probably as a freeman on the British island of Grenada in 1767, Christophe rose to power as a military figure in revolution-torn French Haiti. He grew up under the aegis of his two great forerunners, the stern idealist Toussaint L'Ouverture and the violent revolutionary Dessalines. Through this incredible storm and stress he achieved independence and created a French-speaking Negro kingdom in the northern part of the divided island. He built his great palace of San Souci and his towering citadel above Cap-Henry, instituted a new order of nobility among his followers, and began to introduce education, law, and order in the land - only to die by his own hand in 1820 when bad health and a new revolt of his troops undermined his troops undermined his authority. Second only to the fascination of Christophe's personal story is the detailed account of how the revolution was achieved and how the fortunes of the two Haitis were involved in the Napoleonic wars raging in Europe. The British on the neighboring islands, the Spanish sharing the same island of Hispaniola, and the French in precarious tenure battled ne another for control. All this was related in turn to the commercial and political interests of the new United States to the north and had a major bearing on the slave traffic. It set stage for the later history of Haiti, in which the reader will see many parallels today. For its colorful personalities, violent action, and underlying significance, few episodes in history can match the story of Haiti.</p>
