Lois Orswell, David Smith, and Modern Art

Lois Orswell (1904-1998) was a pioneering collector of abstract expressionist art and modern sculpture. She was notable not only for the quality of her acquisitions but also for her exceptional position as a woman collector at a time when men dominated the art world. Orswell focused her attention on sculpture and drawings, rather than paintings, and her collection features the work of such canonical artists as Kline, de Kooning, Rodin, Calder, Moore, Nevelson, and many others. Of all these artists, none was more important than David Smith -- arguably the greatest American sculptor of the twentieth century -- and the book highlights the close connection between collector and artist. 
This handsome volume publishes for the first time the correspondence between Orswell and Smith, which sheds important new light on the sculptor's personality and professional practice. The book also tells the history of the Orswell Collection, which numbers over 340 objects and is housed at the Harvard University Art Museums. 
This book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from September 21, 2002 to February 16, 2003.

This handsomely illustrated book presents more than seventy paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures by Edgar Degas (18341917) in Harvard University’s collectionsone of the most important holdings of the artist’s work in the United States. In 1911, the Fogg Art Museum was the first museum to mount a one-man exhibition on Degas and was the only museum to do so during the artist’s lifetime. This book examines the history of Degas’s reception in the U.S., and in particular the pivotal role that Harvard played.Marjorie Benedict Cohn offers a historical account of the formation of the prized collection of Degas’s works at the Fogg. Jean Sutherland Boggs provides an engaging personal recollection of her initial encounter in 1944 with Degas and his champion at the Fogg, associate director Paul J. Sachs, who inspired not only Boggs’s later work on Degas but also that of many other art historians, museum directors, and curators.

Joseph Pulitzer Jr. inherited the famous name and occupation of his grandfather, the journalist and publisher who established the Pulitzer Prize. Yet while he carried on the family business in St. Louis, he was also building one of the greatest private art collections of the 20th century.
