This book is the first publication on one of the largest and most important private contemporary art collections in the world today, the Rubell Family Collection. Collectors since 1967, the Rubell family (now based in Miami, Florida) today owns some 6,000 works of art, from paintings to sculptures, photography, videos, and installations, by the most significant artists working from the 1970s to the present. It is organized neither chronologically nor alphabetically, but is rather intended to convey the experience of visiting the collection, through the successive installations of the collection since it was opened to the public in Miami in 1996. Neither a catalogue nor an art history manual, this book is a collection of images of contemporary art at its best. It also includes an introduction by collection curator Mark Coetzee, an interview with the Rubells on the collection and the process of collecting, and a full list of plates. Originally based in New York City, the family moved to Miami in 1993 and entered the hotel industry, restoring and re-opening Art Deco hotels such as the Albion. Their collection was first installed in a New York City warehouse; since 1996 it is housed in a former Drug Enforcement Agency building on 29th Street in Miami. Comprising 40,000 square feet of exhibition space, the exhibition changes every six months, and is open year round to the public. The collection welcomes 22,000 visitors a year, making the old DEA warehouse a must-see for every contemporary art fan visiting Miami.

In December 2000, a group of five young German artists, all recent graduates of the prestigious Leipzig Art Academy, organized a small exhibition of their works in Leipzig. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition attracted no notice from the international contemporary art community. From that humble beginning, the "New Leipzig School" has expanded to a dozen artists and grown to be an international phenomenon. On March 19, 2005, MASS MoCA presented the country’s foremost collection of paintings from the New Leipzig School--a collection built by the Rubell Family in Miami--for the first time, and what followed was an international avalanche of attention and demand. The work of German artist Eberhard Havekost critiques the proverbial dialogue between painting and photography by establishing a visual language that hovers in the grey space between the two. What is at once apparent in the juxtaposition of these two seemingly disparate media in Havekost's hands is their mutual dependence--despite their differences. Working from personal photographs and found images, Havekost presents iconography that is familiar to all urban and suburban dwellers: bland Modernist structures, featureless landscapes and images of actual and impending violence. The significance of his work lies not in its subject matter, however, but in its execution. His creations are original works, made by hand, but by digital processes too. Published on the occasion of Havekost's first museum showing in the United States.

Combing the aisles of flea markets, used-book stores and postcard vendors, London-based artist John Stezaker filters and selects images that have a strong sense of déjà vu--Hollywood film stars of a bygone age, postcards of historical monuments, nature scenes and curiosities. Working with these faded images, he sets up compositions that seem to arbitrarily combine disparate components. Through these obstructions of action and recognition, Stezaker sets the viewer free to investigate the subconscious, the psychological, the philosophical--free from the actual. The work of rising Miami artist Hernan Bas indulges in the production of romantic, melancholic, old world imagery that makes reference to Wilde, Huysmans and other writers of the Aesthetic and Decadent period in literature. Reviewing Bas' "pictures of willowy young men filtered through screens of swipey, streaky acrylic and gouache," The New York Times' Holland Cotter once wrote, "To me, his paintings are elements in a larger, continuous conceptual-performance piece about being gay in twenty-first-century America.
