The Eldorado that Bayard Taylor imagined in his youthful poetry was not half so fabulous as the California he finally saw in the historical year of 1849. He joined the flood of Forty-niners, not as a fortune-seeker but as a journalist, sailing from New York on a crowded steamer. The sight of San Francisco dazzled him: the simmering mountains and water and air, the few hundred houses that seemed to multiply before his very eyes, and the streets teeming with people "of a diverse and bizarre character." Real estate was booming, and fortunes were being made, lost, and remade in two months. Before Taylor returned to New York via Mexico in 1850 he would tour the missions, mining camps, and scattered ranches farther inland; note the agricultural potential of the valleys; and talk with the overland emigrants. Taking the feverish pulse of a pitched-together society, he would, like everyone else, be changed by California.

The Irvine Ranch in Orange County is one of the largest properties remaining from California’s Rancho Era. In 1952 the Huntington Library first published the history of this gigantic ranchfrom the days of the Gabrielino Indians, through the rule by Spain and Mexico, to the ownership and administration by four generations of the Irvine family. The ranch was a combination of three large land grants that went, wholly or in part, into the making of the Irvine property.Dr. Cleland tells the history of these grants and provides reproductions of old maps and portraits of early owners. John Doyle Lee (1812-1877) was one of the most controversial figures of early Mormon history. A fervent convert, he was adopted by Brigham Young and rose to become a leading member of the church's hierarchy. Lee left behind a number of colorful diaries that reveal in fascinating clarity and detail the everyday life of Utah's pioneer settlers. In them, he describes his close relationship with Brigham Young, his experiences in converting Native Americans to Mormonism, his trials with farming and livestock, his encounters with his 19 wives, and his eventual exile to the barren wastelands of Lee's Ferry. In the 1950s, five of Lee's diaries in the Huntington collections were meticulously edited and annotated by historians Robert Glass Cleland and Juanita Brooks and published in two volumes by the Huntington Library in 1955 to great acclaim as A Mormon Chronicle, The Diaries of John D. Lee, 1848-1876. The University of Utah Press kept the book in print until the 1990s; it has now been reprinted as a Huntington Library Classic with a new foreword by Andrew Rolle, a Huntington research fellow and retired Cleland Professor of History from Occidental College. In his foreword, Rolle discusses the collaboration between Cleland, a leading historian of the Southwest, and Brooks, a notable scholar of Mormon history.
