<p>After the Marchioness disaster the hands of a number of the deceased were removed for identification purposes. This caused much distress to relatives and caused and pressure for an inquiry. This inquiry, whilst principally dealing with the Marchioness tragedy, also looks at procedures in subsequent disasters. The principal lesson is the importance of respecting the dead and their relatives and acting with sensitivity and ensuring that full and accurate information is given at every stage. The report has 36 recommendations, the first of which is that there should be a detailed review of the role of the coroner and a statutory scheme should be devised to codify their powers, duties and responsibilities.</p>
