Noel Lee was the first Territorial to be promoted Brigadier General in WWI and to command the Manchester Brigade of 42nd Infantry Division. Old Etonian and pre-war commanding officer of the 6th Territorial Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. In civilian life a director of the Manchester textile company Tootal Broadhurst Lee. A man of great vision and understanding he was severely wounded in the great battle of Krithia on 4th June 1915, later dying in hospital in Malta. This biography, based on original material in the Manchester Regiment archives, describes the mobilisation of the Manchester Territorials at Rochdale, their arrivl in Alexandria in late September 1915 and then on to the battlefields of Gallipoli. The title of the book is taken from a letter to Mrs Lee from Major General Douglas.

Most Unfavourable Ground: The Battle of Loos, 1915

The year of 1914 had been a difficult one for the British Expeditionary Force, the war that had started in August had not been over by the expected time of Christmas. Additionally many of its original members had become casualties and replacements were difficult to find. 1915 did not go much better, the BEF was still a minor player with only a relatively small number of divisions compared to the many in the French Army. The culmination of several attacks by the BEF in 1915 was the attack in the Loos sector in September where in a mining area north of Arras, the largest British offensive of the war thus far took place. Forced into an offensive in an area which as one senior commander put it was on 'most unfavorable ground', the BEF suffered heavy casualties and little material gain. Probably for these reasons the 1915 battles have been largely ignored and there has been a dearth of decent publications on Loos. Striking Back: Britain's Airborne and Commando Raids 1940-42

As the events of the Second World War fade into the distance it is important that the activities of a small band of brothers are not overlooked. In the dark days following Dunkirk in 1940 these men volunteered for what was euphemistically termed 'Special Service'. Often given very little idea of what they were letting themselves in for, they all wanted to strike back at the enemy. Later, these units evolved into the famed airborne forces and commandos who went on to take a major part in operations such as D-Day, Arnhem and the crossing of the Rhine. However, before this, during the early years of the war, they undertook a number of smaller scale raids. Whilst some of the early raids such as St Nazaire and Dieppe have received quite a lot of coverage, others such as Lofoten, Glomfjord, Tragino and Bruneval have received far less, yet a knowledge of them is vital to give the development of Britain's special forces historical perspective. The formation of these two fledging arms is recounted in detail, including material relating to the training undertaken before going on Special Service. In addition to the operations mentioned above raids on the Channel Islands, the coast of northern France, Vaagso, North Africa and Vermork are also covered. As well as numerous eyewitness accounts from veterans a selection of official reports, kit, weapon and explosives lists are included. The book is complemented by around 125 photographs and maps.

Books on the events of the early months of 1940 are dominated by the desperate fighting undertaken by the British Expeditionary Force in Northern France and Belgium following the German invasion of May 10th and it is often overlooked that prior to this another British expeditionary force was involved in fierce fighting in Norway. Indeed, the invasion on April 9th saw the first use of airborne troops in the war and was also one of the very few amphibious operations undertaken by the Germans during the Second World War. It is hoped that Niall Cherry's new two-volume work covering the Allied intervention in Norway 1940 will fill this significant gap. The author provides a detailed account of the German invasion and the Allied reaction, including the land, sea and air battles. This includes such actions as the sinking of HMS Glowworm and HMS Glorious, the Gladiators on the frozen lakes and Maurice Force, the sacrifice of the Territorial Battalions at Tretten and the Independent Companies, to name but a few. You'll Be Hearing from Us is a detailed investigation into Operation Anthropoid and its consequences. Operation Anthropoid was a politically motivated plan devised by the Czech Government-in-Exile to assassinate a high-ranking German official in what was then known as the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. This book tells the story of the assassins, Jozef Gabčik and Jan Kubiš, covering their escape from occupied Czechoslovakia through their time in France before their successful arrival in the UK as part of the evacuated Czech Legion. The book also covers their selection, training and return to Czechoslovakia. The target for the assassination was SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the architect of the Final Solution and seen by many senior Nazis as a future leader of the Third Reich. The book covers the preparations for the operation, its execution, the manhunt for the perpetrators and the aftermath of the attack, including the destruction of the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. Also included is a translation of the Gestapo report on the assassination together with a number of photographs which appeared in it.
