Chao Shao-an (1905–1998) came of age at a tumultuous time in Chinese history. The role of artist was hotly debated as China moved into the modern era and China's first formal art schools were founded. Chao became a leader in the modernist movement and endeavored "to learn from Nature but be inspired by inner sensibility." He cofounded the Lingnan Art Studio to teach and promote this vital, fresh approach. The masterful paintings presented here are characteristic of Chao's free, fluid brushwork, his use of vibrant color, and his inventive compositions. Chao Shao-an is especially noted for his talent in depicting birds, flowers, and insects. The renowned living master of the Lingnan school, an early in 20th-century movement to modernize Chinese painting, Chao Shao-an now lives in Hong Kong. The 80 paintings illustrated in this handsome volume include album studies, water buffalo, great bursts of azaleas, landscapes, and a portrait. The works are arranged chronologically within subject category, and represent a personal assessment of his achievements in visual effects, pictorial concepts, and scale. They record the artist's convictions about Chinese painting of the modem age and the Lingnan school.

Chao Shao-an's fluid brushwork, vibrant colors, and inventive compositions drive the exquisite flower, bird, animal, and insect paintings for which he is revered. Chao came of age just after the fall of China's last imperial dynasty. Along with the founders of the Lignan school, he sought to revitalize Chinese art and refresh artistic connections with nature. He looked to the West for inspiration, all the while honoring ancient Chinese heritage. Ultimately, Chao became a leader in his homeland's modernist art movement. His style is loose and expressive yet grounded by such symbolism as frogs for good fortune, plum blossoms for perseverance, and cranes for longevity and human wisdom. Twelve of Chao's masterful paintings adorn this calendar, a selection taken from his nearly 80-year career. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on environmentally sourced paper.
