Jonathan Carver’s Travels through the Interior Parts of North America, in the Years 1766, 1767, and 1768 became a bestseller in London in the 1780s, and arguments over its author’s accuracy and honesty have raged ever since. This book published for the first time the well-known explorer’s original account of his expedition. Editor John Parker compares and interweaves the four manuscript versions of Carver’s journals discovered in the twentieth century in the British Museum to form the text of this book. Also included are the hitherto unpublished journal of veteran fur trader James Stanley Goddard, who accompanied Carver; related correspondence; a Dakota dictionary; commissions and other records; and a bibliography of major editions of the Travels. In this volume John Parker explains the alleged plagiarism, examines Carver’s early life, and offers new information on the land swindle in the Midwest known as the “Carver grant.”  Editor John Parker was curator of the James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota, a collection specializing in early travel and exploration.

Born in Massachusetts in 1710, Jonathan Carver joined the Massachusetts Colonial Militia at the age of 45 at the beginning of the French and Indian War. He worked his way through the ranks, first with Burke’s Rangers and then with Roger’s Rangers. In 1761, he became Captain of a Massachusetts provincial regiment.Following Britain’s victory over France, Carver decided to use the surveying and cartography skills he had acquired during his military experience to chart the northern plains in an attempt to find the Northwest Passage. “It appeared to me indispensably needful,” he wrote, “that the Government should be acquainted in the first place with the true state of the dominions they were now become possessed of.” The British government had offered a considerable prize to the first person to discover a new transcontinental trade route with the East. Royal Governor Robert Rogers sponsored Carver’s exploration, however, when Roberts was arrested and tried for treason (a charge for which he would later be proven not guilty), Carver was left carrying the expenses of his expedition. Carver eventually moved to England, leaving his family behind in the colonies. He spent the remainder of his life seeking reimbursement from the government. It was during this time in his life that he wrote this account, detailing of the experiences of his exploration of what is now Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Carver suspected the French had purposefully misrepresented the people and natural resources of the region, and believed it was important both to set the record straight as well as to present his recommendations regarding potential British Colonization.

The fleet, he adds, went in quest of efepha'h'ts teeth and peacocks to the western Coast of Africa, which is Tarsifh; theii to Ophir for. gold, which is Haite, or the island of Hifpaniola; and in the latter opinion he is supported by Columbus, who, when he discovered that island, thought he could trace the furnaces In which the gold was refined. To these migrations, which preceded the Christian æra, he adds many others of a later date from different nations, but these I have not time to enumerate. For the fame reason I am obliged to pass ovef numberless writers on this subject; and shall content myself with only giving the sentiments of two or three more. The first of these is Pierre De Charlevoix, a Frenchman, who in his journal of a voyage to North America, made so lately as the year 1720, has recapitulated the opinions of a variety of authors on this head, to which he has subjoined his own OWti conjectures. But the latter cannot without some difficulty be extracted, as they are so interwoven' with tfhe passages fie has quoted, that it requites much attention tio discriminate them. He seems to allow that America might have received its first! inhabitants from Tattaty and Hyrcanfa.
