Critic Roberta Smith has written about Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, “Whether Nick Cave's efforts qualify as fashion, body art or sculpture, and almost regardless of what you ultimately think of them, they fall squarely under the heading of Must Be Seen to Be Believed...” Meet Me at the Center of the Earth features sculptures that Cave calls Soundsuits, to evoke the sense of movement, rattles and rustles inherent in the design of the pieces―which are composed of manufactured and handmade fabrics, such as beads, sequins, bottle caps, old toys, twigs and hair, and seem poised to explode into ritual dance. Exploring issues of ceremony, ritual, identity and myth, they embrace various traditions, as well as cultural and historical references, from African fetish objects to Japanese Butoh dance.

The visionary paintings of Martin Wong, one of the unsung geniuses of New York's East Village art scene of the 1980s, are collected here and examined in depth for the first time. Entirely self-taught, Wong creates intricate compositions that combine gritty social documents, cosmic witticisms, and highly charged symbolic languages-customized manual alphabets for the deaf, street graffiti, Nuyorican poetry, hand-lettered signs, meticulously rendered brick facades, rearrangements of Zodiac signs-sometimes within a single painting. The urban landscape of Loisaida, the Hispanic section of the Lower East Side where Wong lives, is the source of his imagery. A central figure in New York's East Village art scene of the 1980s, Wojnarowicz was a painter, sculptor, photographer, writer, installation artist, musician, and video- and filmmaker. After being diagnosed as HIV-positive in the late 1980s, Wojnarowicz engaged in widely publicized debates over medical research and funding, censorship in the arts, and politically-sanctioned homophobia, lending his art a sharply political edge. Willie Doherty works in photography, video and sound, reflecting back a world shaped by television, film and real and imagined collective memory--by the nightly news, movie fantasies and advertising. He balances on the narrow threshold between the documentary and the staged, questioning his chosen media's inherent claims to truth. His pieces, many of which reflect on life in his native Northern Ireland, have appeared at Paris's Centre Georges Pompidou, the Liverpool Tate Gallery and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Doherty, born in Derry in 1959, was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994 and 2003, and represented Ireland at the 1993 and 2007 Venice Biennales. Willie Doherty documents the entirety of his film and video work, now in one place for the first time.
