The introduction covers a range of topics: the origin and dispersal of plants; literature in the field; use of medicinal plants within traditional Fijian culture; diseases of Fiji; and medicinal chemicals from plants. Other chapters describe 450 plant species; each entry is arranged by plant family, and gives current botanical name, Fijian/local name, brief botanical notes, medicinal uses and chemistry. The book includes an index to plant species, an index of Fijian names and a glossary of medical and botanical terms. Of interest to botanists and pharmacologists, however, "everyday" terms are used as much as possible. This book may assist scientists in further investigations and point the way to plants from which new and effective cures may be obtained.
