This first volume of a magisterial two-volume survey of English music charts its development from its beginnings to about 1715. It looks at the music of early monastic institutions and the development of polyphony, including the extraordinarily advanced mid-thirteenth-century canon, "Sumeris icumen in." It deals with the first Golden Age of English music, namely the mid-fifteenth-century composers represented in the Old Hall Manuscript, such as Dunstable and Power. It looks at the remarkable flowering of sixteenth-century choral music, of which Tallis's 'Spem in Alium' is a splendid example. And it charts the rise of the carol, the madrigal, and the seventeenth-century opera and masque and instrumental music, culminating in the genius of Henry Purcell. A well-balanced, judicious survey, with a unity of style and outlook resulting from its single author, the book makes a discussion of the actual music the focus of each chapter, without excluding social and historical comment.

This book is a guide to the editorial procedures suitable for music written from the Middle Ages to about 1830 and replaces the 1963 pamphlet by Thurston Dart, Walter Emery, and Christopher Morris. An introductory chapter on the principles of editing and transcribing is followed by three chronologically-arranged chapters: the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, the Renaissance, and Baroque and Classical periods. The final chapter deals with the preparation of copy and other practical matters. The book does not aim to describe early notations in detail; rather it is intended for the guidance of those who have already acquired a good knowledge of palaeography, notation, and source studies, and who may wish to give practical thought to the problems of presentation in the form of an edition. John Caldwell is University Lecturer in Music and a Fellow of Keble College. He has been the general editor of the Series Musica da Camera (OUP) and is general editor of Corpus of Early Keyboard Music (American Institute of Musicology.

The Oxford History of English Music, Volume 2 takes the story of English Music from c.1715 to the present day. Apart from discussing the music of the principal composers, it focuses to a certain extent on the work of lesser musicians, and includes developments in light and popular music as well as in serious genres. After seven chapters in which the main events are considered chronologically, a further chapter deals specifically with folk music and popular music of all periods, and a final chapter covers social issues not otherwise handled in detail. There are over a hundred musical examples, illustrating all chapters except the last, and all based on original sources.

The Oxford History of English Music: Volume II: c.1715 to the Present Day

Since its publication in 1985, Editing Early Music has been the guide to editorial procedures suitable for music written from the Middle Ages to about 1830. For this revised edition, Caldwell has made a number of corrections, brought the bibliography up to date, and added a Postscript on stemmatics and textual criticism.

The first american painting to enter the Museum's collection, Henry Peters Gray's Wages of War, was received in 1872, two years after the Museum's founding. Since then over 1600 American paintings by about 800 artists have entered the collection through purchase, gift, and bequest. Of these, some 950 paintings by approximately 400 artists born before 1876 are the holding of the Department of American Paintings and Sculpture. The Museum's collection of American paintings, give its overall quality and comprehensiveness, is perhaps the finest that exists in public or private hands.
 This book is the first in a three-volume catalogue which not only will be of special use to the general public in its direct and easily comprehensible style and informative text, but also it will be an invaluable tool for scholars because of the references and scholarly substance. The works included in this catalogue form a comprehensive overview of American painting during the colonial and early republican periods. Remarkably enough, almost every artist of note working in this time span is represented here by either a masterpiece or a work of outstanding quality. The Metropolitan Museum's collection of American paintings is probably the finest anywhere. It has its weakness, and the reader may notice a slant toward New York artist, but, in spite of this, no finer gathering is to be found.
