Although railway privatisation is only just over a decade old, there have been a great variety of liveries that have been introduced since then that have, for a variety of reasons, disappeared. The factors behind these losses are many and varied. In certain cases the franchisee has ceased to exist either as a result of having the franchise stripped from them as a result of poor performance or losing out when the franchise was up for renegotiation. This has resulted, for example, in the disappearance most recently of Central Trains, Midland Main Line and Great North Eastern. Then there are the liveries that represented earlier phases in the history of the ongoing franchisees; on South West Trains, for example, the original livery as applied to the rolling stock inherited from BR has largely disappeared as a result of the arrival of new rolling stock, the withdrawal of the older types and the refurbishment of the Class 455s. In addition there were various advertising liveries applied - such a those featuring airlines used on the Gatwick Express services and those highlighting Remembrance Day on South West Trains. In all, around 200 liveries and variants have come and gone since 1994 and this new book is a comprehensive reference to all the liveries that have come and gone since privatisation was introduced.

In the summer of 1986, BR radically overhauled its regionally based passenger business for the first time since nationalization in 1948. The traditional regions, such as Western and London Midland, were replaced by four new passenger sectors: InterCity (concentrating on the main-line express network), Network SouthEast (concentrating on those services covering London and the Home Counties), Regional Railways (the non-Intercity passenger services in England and Wales outside the southeast), and ScotRail (effectively the old Scottish Region). Each of these sectors sought to create a new identity, marking the final demise of the Rail Blue livery that had dominated the railway scene for two decades. This exciting new title aims to follow the style of the successful Steam Trails series and record the operation of various diesel-hydraulic classes in southwest England, from the early 1960s through to their final withdrawal. In the process of dieselization, while the bulk of BR favored the use of diesel-electric traction, for the Western Region, diesel-hydraulic transmission was selected. Based on German technology, hydraulic transmission theoretically offered a better power-to-weight ratio and four classes of main-line locomotive were built between 1958 and 1965. In all, just over 350 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were constructed, but as a consequence of unreliability, loss of traffic, and reduction in the railway industry, all had been withdrawn by early 1978. A significant number survive in preservation, where they remain hugely popular among enthusiasts. Expert David Cable uses informative captions and descriptive text alongside a variety of unseen and previously unpublished illustrations to tell the tale of Hydraulics in the West.

Launched in 1964, with the XP64 rake of Class 48 and coaches, the era of Rail Blue was to dominate Britain's main-line railways for almost two decades until the sectorisation of the 1980s. By the end of steam in August 1968, increasing numbers of locomotives, units and coaches were appearing in the new livery, so much so that the final steam specials operated in August 1968 included blue and grey coaching stock within the formation.  For the modeller, the BR blue era has its attractions in that it straddles the period of the late 1960s when steam and green diesels predominated through to the era of sectorisation in the mid-1980s. Moreover, although not all classes of first-generation of diesel and electric locomotives and rolling stock survived to be repainted in blue, there were odd examples of most classes repainted.  Blue Diesel Days Revisited is a compilation of photographs, all previously unpublished, portraying the operation of blue-liveried locomotives and rolling stock throughout the BR network in this period along with detailed captions together with an informative linking narrative.

The origins of the Canadian network are somewhat different to that of the U S A, in that it was originally largely projected and funded from Britain, as part of the British Empire. The two major networks being The Canadian National and The Canadian Pacific, both of which operated large networks across the whole of the country. In addition to rail operation, The Canadian Pacific owned and operated a sizable fleet of cargo and passenger ships, between Canada and Europe. Canada also had some smaller operators who ran services in odd corners of the country, like The Prince Edward Island Railway and The Newfoundland Railway. David Cable has journeyed across Canada, extensively photographing the Network of both the large and small operators, often recording scenes in the most obscure locations.

Rails Across Australia is an album of photographs taken by David Cable, a well-regarded British author of several albums of train pictures throughout the world. The photos were taken initially during the period between 1967 and 1973 when David lived in Adelaide, and then during several visits around the Commonwealth during the twenty-first century.The photos cover a wide variety of trains in the mainland states, from Queensland to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and include pictures showing trains in the landscapes, as well as close-up photos of locomotives for the modelling enthusiasts. The well-known problems of different gauges originally established in the various states are illustrated by the individual classes designed for them, in addition to the newest designs for the standard gauge tracks now linking them.
