<p>Lloyd Tilghman: Confederate General in the Western Theatre Bryan Bush's latest is the first detailed biography devoted entirely to capturing the story of one of the South's forgotten but distinguished sons. The book relays the life of Lloyd Tilghman; West Point graduate, soldier, engineer, family man. Coming to build a railroad, the talented engineer settled in Paducah, Kentucky in 1852, with his wife Augusta and their eight children. With the advent of the Civil War, the Mexican war veteran followed his convictions south, becoming a Colonel of the 3rd Kentucky Infantry. Many of the members of the Kentucky State Guard followed him. Promoted to Brigadier General, Tilghman assumed responsibility for the strategically important rivers in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. Guarding the Gateway into the South by holding Ft. Henry on the Tennessee River, Tilghman fought overwhelming odds against Commodore Andrew Foote and General U.S. Grant. Succumbing to naval firepower, Tilghman surrendered Ft. Henry. Taken prisoner, he was later exchanged, becoming an infantry brigade commander. During the Battle of Champion s Hill on May 16, 1864, while directing artillery fire, Tilghman was struck by a shell fragment and killed, ending a promising military and civilian career.</p>

One of the most vilified and hated men during the Civil War in Kentucky had to be Kentucky born Union (brevet) Major General Stephen Gano Burbridge, but why have Kentuckian historians continue to cast him negatively. Burbridge had a meteoric rise as a military commander, starting out as a colonel of the 26th Kentucky Union infantry and becoming a Major General by 1863. He had fought well at Arkansas Post and Champion s Hill during the Vicksburg Campaign and received the praise of Union General William T. Sherman. Burbridge also received the thanks of President Abraham Lincoln for his victory over Confederate General John Hunt Morgan s forces at Cynthiana, Kentucky. Burbridge s problems arose when he became military commander of Kentucky in January of 1864. With encouragement of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Burbridge helped to raise and arm slaves for the United States Colored Troops, which offended Kentucky Union slaveholders and Kentucky Governor Thomas Bramlette. He also issued Order 59 in which every Union soldier killed by a guerilla, four Confederate prisoners would be taken to the spot and shot. His brutal tactics to stop guerilla warfare in Kentucky ended up alienating Unionists in the state and moved Kentucky away from the Republican Party and towards the Democratic Party. Burbridge has also been accused of fixing the 1864 state and presidential elections and accused him of being involved in the Great Hog Swindle of 1864. The thesis of this book will deal with the military career of Stephen Gano Burbridge and the factors that eventually led to his downfall as military commander of Kentucky and his eventual ostracism from Kentucky. The thesis will demonstrate how Burbridge s policies towards guerillas did not differ from Union General William T. Sherman s treatment of guerillas and Sherman actually influenced Burbridge s policy decision towards guerillas. Not only did Union General William T. Sherman influence Burbridge s decisions, but so did the Reverend Robert Breckinridge, Secretary of War Henry Stanton, Kentucky Governor Thomas Bramlette and the Radical Republicans. While Burbridge commanded a brigade in Kentucky in early 1862, he made friends with powerful radical Republicans, who later helped him secure his position as military commander in Kentucky and influenced his decisions on how to govern the state. While Burbridge fought in the Vicksburg campaign, he became friends with Union General William T. Sherman, who also influenced Burbridge s decisions as military commander in Kentucky. Governor Bramlette also influenced Burbridge s decisions, but Burbridge s decision to recruit and arm blacks and disarming the state guard, brought an end to their friendship and the governor s efforts to remove Burbridge from command.

<p>Abraham Lincoln and the Speeds: The Untold Story of a Devoted and Enduring Friendship. The book is a dual biography of Joshua and James Speed and tells the story of how closely the friendship between Joshua Speed and Abraham Lincoln continued to affect not only Joshua Speed s life, but also the life of his brother James Speed. Both Joshua and James were dedicated to the Union, even though they followed different paths. James was a Unionist, emancipationist, abolitionist, and Radical Republican. He entered politics, becoming a state representative and later Attorney-General under Abraham Lincoln and later Andrew Johnson. Joshua Speed lived his life as a businessman. He differed from his brother and Lincoln on the subject of emancipation, but felt that the issue should not hinder his support of the Union. In April of 1861 after the attack on Fort Sumter, the citizens of Kentucky debated the issue of whether to join the Union or Confederacy. Because of Joshua and James Speed s loyalty to the Union, Lincoln depended on the brothers to help secure Kentucky for the Union. With their help, Lincoln managed to transport thousands of weapons into Kentucky for distribution among the loyal Union Home Guard. During the war Lincoln needed trustworthy friends to help him deal with the delicate situation in Kentucky. James and Joshua Speed kept him informed on both the political and the civilian affairs. After Lincoln s death, James and Joshua helped to preserve his legacy in their individual ways. James became a Radical Republican and fought to gain equality under the law for blacks, even though most of Kentucky did not want to follow the Radial Republican stance on reconstruction. Joshua helped to maintain Lincoln s legacy by contributing to Lincoln s memorial and speaking and writing about him. With the200th anniversary of Lincoln s birth, the story of Joshua and James Speed can give the reader another window into his friendships. The story of Joshua and James Speed can also reveal information about Kentucky politics during the Civil War; the struggle between Union loyalists and Confederate sympathizers, and the struggle for emancipation, abolition, and those who opposed equal rights for blacks in Kentucky.</p>

Lincoln and the Speeds

Native Scotsman Andrew Cowan immigrated with his family to New York in 1848 and was attending Madison University when the Civil War erupted upon the American landscape. At the young age of 20, he answered the call for volunteers from President Abraham Lincoln and joined the Union army. Over the next four years, he rose through the ranks of the artillery, becoming a colonel commanding his own brigade. During his military career he fought in some of the most bloody and costly battles of the Civil War, including the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and the Overland Campaign, as well as the battle of Gettysburg, where his battery literally faced Confederate General George Pickett s Charge. In 1865, Cowan was even present at the surrender of Appomattox, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, which essentially ended the Civil War conflict. Following the War, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky and became a very successful businessman in the leather industry. With his success in business, he decided to follow in the footsteps of Andrew Carnegie and use his wealth towards philanthropic endeavors. He was on the board of directors for the Southern Exposition (1883-1887), helped raise funding for the base of the Statue of Liberty, and came up with the idea for a Louisville Park System. Once his idea of a Louisville Park system was approved by the philanthropic organizations in Louisville and the city, he helped raise funding for the Louisville park system and served as President for the board of Park Commissioners. Later in life, he tried to mend the wounds from the Civil War that tore the country apart. He was the father of the Blue and Gray Reunion at Gettysburg in 1887 and helped organize the Fiftieth Anniversary Reunion at Gettysburg, was entertainment director for the 1895 Grand Army of the Republic reunion in Louisville, helped with the organization of the 1905 and 1917 Confederate Veteran s reunion in Louisville, and helped raise funding and helped organize the festivities for the unveiling of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Although he fought for the North during the War, he dedicated his life after the War towards fostering peace between the North and South. He served not only his city and his country, but also he served his fellow man.
