In 1939 a discovery was made which has been described as "the greatest single find in the archaeological annals of England" and later as "one of the most generous single benefactions ever made to the British Museum by a single donor in his or her lifetime". This momentous find was the Sutton Hoo ship-burial, on the banks of the River Deben near Woodbridge, in Suffolk. A 90-feet-long ship had been buried in the sand, a rich funeral treasure laid out amidships and a barrow raised over it. The burial was that of a 7th century Anglo-Saxon King. The items then discovered which are exhibitable can be seen in the British Museum. They include a rich gold and jewelled harness, a sceptre, a splendid shield, gold coins and a sumptuous purse, buckets, cauldrons, ornamental iron chain work, shoes and combs, drinking horns, bottles, a lyre of maple wood and late Roman or Byzantine silver. The work on the material, and its curatorship, have been under the direction of Dr Rupert Bruce-Mitford, who has written extensively about the burial and its background and interpretation. The discovery impinges on innumerable aspects of early European life and history. In this volume, Dr Bruce-Mitford has collected a number of his writings from the last twenty year. All have been revised and updated and all are profusely illustrated.

The Sutton Hoo ship burial excavated near Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1939, is the most important and richest single archaeological discover every made in the British Isles. It was probably the funeral monument of Raedwald, King of the East Angles, who died in AD 624/5, and it is the first known monument to an English King. Every since the discovery was made in the months immediately proceeding the outbreak of the Second World War, it has been recognized as a fine of the highest historical, archaeological and art-historical value. The treasure contained in the ship-burial included Byzantine silver, Celtic hanging-bowls, a helmet and shield of Swedish type, locally made Germanic gold jewelry that is the finest of its era, and a purse of Merovingian gold coins, an essential clue to the dating of the ship-burial. The implications of the power and the wide reach of trade in these objects gathered together on a Suffolk heath are enormous, and the literature describing them in their social and historical context, and shows the latest reconstruction of the most complex objects after years of research. It opens a window on the fascinating world ruled by the only East Anglian King to be called bretwalda -the high-king-with power over other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

Report on the excavations in 1950-52, 1954 and 1974 of the site at Mawgan Porth, remarkable as it is uniquely complete and possesses well-preserved houses, a closely associated cemetery and a large quantity of stratified pottery and other objects which make it possible to fill in details of the economy and community life. The excavations uncovered three distinct but similar groups of buildings known as courtyard houses containing evidence of a date of occupation between c. AD 850 and 1050. Each courtyard group comprised a long main room along one side, with a partitioned end for livestock, several smaller rooms around the remaining sides and a narrow entrance. The cemtery contained adult and child graves enclosed in slab graves. Pottery forms a homogenous group with distinctive forms and fabric which shows local and possible Continental influence. Other finds included simple stone tools, an abundance of perforated local slates and a silver penny of Aethelred the Unready which gives a fixed central date.
