Rod Broome traces his northern roots in this charming memoir. Born in Lancashire in 1937, Rod was the treasured only child in a close extended family. He was to remain the center of attention until his sister Maureen was born seven years later. His childhood was one of playing draughts with his granddad, keeping hens with his father and playing games in the street with his friends. He talks about his family, his growing interest in nature and photography and his time at grammar school. After leaving school, Rod did his national service in the army, before training to be a teacher.
