The need for an integrated approach to the design of complex engineering systems involving electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and computing has become increasingly apparent in recent years and has led to the growth of the concept of mechatronics. However, it is a concept which is as yet not particularly well defined; a broad range of interpretations has been placed upon it. The following definition has been adopted within the EEe: Mechatronics is the synergetic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic co. ntrol and systems thinking in the design of products and processes. From this definition it is clear that mechatronics is not itself a separate discipline within the overall spectrum of engineering but rather represents an integration across a number of different fields within engineering. This text is therefore an attempt to set out the nature of mechatronics for a broad engineering audience. In order to achieve this objective the text aims to provide an indication of the range and scope of a mechatronic approach to the design of engineering systems and to identify the major areas of technology involved in such systems. It has its origins in the engineering degree course at Lancaster University and, specifically, in Professor Michael French's concept that engineering design should form a connecting theme throughout the whole of this course.

The subject of power electronics originated in the early part of the twentieth century with the development and application of devices such as the mercury arc rectifier and the thyratron valve. Indeed many of the circuits currently in use and described in this book were developed in that period. However, the range of applications for these early devices tended to be restricted by virtue of their size and problems of reliability and control. With the development of power semiconductor devices, offering high reliability in a relatively compact form, power electronics began to expand its range and scope, with applications such as DC motor control and power supplies taking the lead. Initially, power semiconductor devices were available with only relatively low power levels and switching speeds. However, developments in device technology resulted in a rapid improvement in performance, accompanied by a corresponding increase in applications. These now range from power supplies using a single transistor to high voltage DC transmission where the mercury arc valve was replaced in the 1970s by a solid-state 'valve' using thyristor stacks. Developments in microprocessor technology have also influenced the develop ment of power electronics. This is particularly apparent in the areas of control, where analogue controllers are being replaced by digital systems, and in the evolution of the 'smart power' devices. These developments have in turn led to system improvements in areas such as robot drives, power supplies and railway traction systems.

The common thread is the use of radiation in these analyses. The term "radiation" is used in the widest possible sense. The book encompasses the use of electromagnetic radiation in its microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x ray and &ggr; ray forms and the use of particulate forms such as electrons, neutrons and charged particles for which the Planck's Law relation applies. In many cases there is an interplay between the two forms: for example, proton induced x ray emission (PIXE), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). As far as possible the chapters have been arranged in order of ascending particle energy. Thus it commences with the use of microwaves and finishes with the use of &ggr; rays. The authors were chosen on the basis of their expertise as practitioners of their particular field of study. This means that, for example, the mature fields of study such as the IR and UV study of paintings have been written by senior researchers, whereas for the emerging fields of synchrotron and neutron techniques the chapters have been written by talented researchers at the commencement of their careers.
