It is believed that the Blackfeet people abandoned the Great Lakes region for the West more than 300 years ago, probably in reaction to the arrival of Europeans. Once on the Plains, they rid themselves of their woodland habits and adopted the nomadic lifestyle of their Plains counterparts. By the winter of 1882, however, faced with the disappearance of the buffalo, the Blackfeet were compelled to take up residence on an ever-shrinking government reservation. In 1895, for example, the Blackfeet sold what is today Glacier National Park to the U.S. government, which was acting on behalf of the mining industry.The Blackfeet occupy four different reservations in North America: the Piegan Agency, the Blood Agency, and the Blackfoot Reservation, all in Montana; and the Canadian Blackfeet Agency in Alberta. (The Piegan, the Blackfeet, and the Bloods all speak an Algonquian dialect and, in the aggregate, are all confederated as "Blackfeet.") Browning, Montana, is the seat of the Blackfeet tribal government.This groundbreaking book is a transcription of microfilm copies of a census of the Piegan Indians of Montana, taken by George B. McLaughlin and Thomas P. Fuller, U.S. Indian Agents, in 1897 and 1898 respectively. Tribal members are arranged by household, and for each person the information provided consists of English name, sex, relationship to head of household, and age. More than 2,000 persons are identified in all. The comprehensive name index makes it easy to find any person listed in the census, while Mr. Bowen's brief Introduction puts everything into context.

Between 1911 and 1921, Native Americans submitted more than 2,500 pages of wills and probate records to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Researchers will find members of the following tribes represented in this collection: Chippewa, Sioux, Apache, Shawnee, Quapaw, Assinboin, Leach Lake Chippewa, Confederated Flathead, Ponca, Cheyenne, Crow, Sac & Fox, Nez Perce, Southern Ute, Omaha, Osage, and more. Jeff Bowen, who was responsible for having the National Archives microfilm the collection, has transcribed about 180 manuscript pages consisting of 96 verbatim wills for this volume. As a rule, the documents identify the names of the testator, residence, heirs, a description of any real estate transferred in the will, names of executors and witnesses, and other particulars commonly found in probate records. In all, genealogists will find references to about 2,000 individuals in these documents, every one of whom is referenced in the complete name index at the back.

This is a transcription of the fifth and sixth year (1919-1920) of a census of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians taken by James E. Henderson, Indian Agent representing the U.S. government for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The entire census covers the eight years between 1915 and 1922 and is based on a microfilm copy of a typescript originally on file at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Between May 1905 and April 1907, the U.S. Supreme Court authorized the Secretary of the Interior to identify the descendants of Eastern Cherokees entitled to participate in the distribution of more than $1 million authorized by Congress.
